Test flying this weekend, but not in ABQ

What's I'm up to...
I'm working on a completely new glider. I have components to flight test this weekend, but I have to do that on Sunday locally, then run back into the shop.

During the first third of the year I will get occasional opportunities to fly with you guys, especially at events. The next club date is March 30th, and we have practice days before AZ and UT to consider.
------------------
I'm not saying I can definitely go yet, but... Would anyone like to carpool to Arizona (Feb 16-17) and/or Utah (March 22-23)? If so, please PM me or give me a ring in the shop 505-747-0990.

Thank you for the encouragement—always appreciated. Working on it!

I may have some of the new components flying at AZ and UT—so far, so good. The new fuselage is a couple months away.

Skunkworks...yes, you are right. Pics, not at all. No unveil for awhile yet.

Three of us are doing development. My primary tasking is the composite design and executing the build, although I do get some influence beyond the structural aspects. The other two gentlemen (who may choose to remain anonymous) are primary on the aero design.

The entire glider is evolving as we seek specific performance targets, and many things will evolve. Hundreds of hours already <phew!>, and our combined years of experience behind that.

We're working our way through a list of ideas and concepts, a couple of which are exotic. Unless we can demonstrate a performance advantage, the exotic stuff will merely be interesting exercises.

Since I'm building, I get to perform initial flight tests. I had wing #1 up for the first time on Wednesday using a v.IV fuse and horizontal. It is, right now, the best performing wing I've ever flown. So we've done a good job so far.

Step-by-step...

Gregg - I feel like I didn't thank you enough for your help at the Az Open. You definitely got me into my best flight of the contest. I still don't have a clue how you did it. It was like magic. And from what I have read other people say thermals like that were hard to find.

Thanks again.

Jim:

My pleasure, I assure you. When you learn the business better, just be sure to help someone else.

Find, buy, borrow or steal a copy of Dave Thornburg's book, "The Old Buzzard;s Soaring Book". All will be revealed when you read that little book.

I trust we will see you again in Utah, at the Red Rocks. I'll be happy to time for you any heat.

Yours, Greg

Aradhana,

unless this is part of the secret recipe, what constitutes a "best" wing? Having flown the AZ Open, and watching different planes fly together, it was my impression that moving upwind from way downwind was what mattered most. All planes, from light Concepts to heavy Blasters, were able to launch, thermal, and land, and it was the pilot's ability to find thermals, and make it back to the field, that really mattered.

It's like comparing a Ferrari to a Corvette - both can lap the Nürburgring at comparable speed, and both have more horsepower than 99.95% of their owners will ever need. It comes down to intangibles - sound, steering feel, etc.

How much better can DLGs get, and what would would differentiate a better plane from a good plane?

Cheers, Charles
