Slick Day 11-5-11

It was a great day. Too many slicks to count. Weaser42's 104 maiden was awesome. Early in the flight he pulled up into the best pop top I've seen.

We had 16! 104 is amazing. I had a bad landing where I was too hot, did not get on rudder enough, and side swiped the curb breaking a rudder hinge though. Was going to try to repair it and fly Sunday but I may just wait and replace it.

Come out Sunday if you get a chance, think I got the 104 patched up enough to fly Sun.

Hmm... should have left 104 at home today.

1st flight my hinge repair did not hold up, no big deal as it should still be fine.

Decided to see if I could charge the 104 packs from flight 1 using my car battery @ 20A rate. Charger actually did hit 20A which was cool, walked away to ready another plane. Ben's brother notices smoke coming from my car, run over and leads from car batt to charger were ON FIRE! In hindsight they were pretty thin wires (bout 14 ga) and with only 12V source were probably pulling 45-50A I'd guess. No damage to anything but wires and a slightly melted car batt cap.

Teik-Ee shows up and I take up the 104 to show it off... get a bit out of sorts low, recover but hit bottom of rudder in the process. Thinking to myself I might have damaged the next hinge up in the process. Then I realize I only have rudder authority in one direction...umm... not good. Of coulse I still fly out the pack (think I mentioned before about being stupid instead of brave). Come in to land, should have tried to slow down even more than I did I guess... on rollout I can't steer and she turns staight into a curb. Smashed up a pant really bad and chipped one end of the prop. the rudder was only being held on by one hinge and has two good breaks along the back side where it crumpled during the hit. Nothing like getting the new off a plane real quick I guess

I need to find some hinges, should be able to repair rudder, probably need new pants... both for the plane and myself

14 Guage wire is usually rated at 15 amps. In the RC world they seem to use it for double that. I guess they get away with it because it is so short. Cut your supply rate in 1/2 or less and....

Hope you get your parts quicker than my VR1 it's been a couple months.

Glad to hear it wasn't major.

Ouch. Oh well, now you don't have to worry about dings, etc.

Glad it wasn't worse.

Is there a better hinge system? What does Aeroworks or PAU use?

Thanks for showing me the 104. Unfortunate what happened with the landing.... without rudder and tail wheel control.

It sure is a beauty and sounds great with that carbon prop carving into the morning air. Makes me wanting one too...NOT!!

Here's a few nice pictures......

I need to come fly with you guys on a Saturday. I live in the subdivision just north of that field.

I have a 51" slick and a few other planes. when do you guys usually meet there on the weekends?
