Newport 12 Build Log

Just getting started on the Newport 12 I picked up through Craigs List a few months ago. I am going to make a planked deck, not the fiberglass deck that came with it. As near as I can figure, the hull is about 25 years old, and was in storage for most of that time.

Looking good! If it's anything like the other boats you built, it will be beautiful.

With the torque generated by that Servo City gearbox, those cabinet catches are going to need to be very strong.

Martin,
Yes, I am concerned if they will be strong enough. If not, it will be easy enough to change to a bolt down fastener. It takes over 16 pounds of force to open as is, and I plan to run the lines from the servo as horizontal as possible to limit any lifting force on the radio board. Will find out in a few months!

Made a bit of progress. Finished the sub-deck framing, installed the rudder servo and made a tracing of the framing for future reference. (Thanks for the idea, Ed!) The class rules were revised in 2006 to allow for the rudder servo to be off of the radio board, but the AMYA rules currently posted are out of date.

Brad,

You will find that pattern you made to be very helpful after the deck is installed.

A few shots of hull sub-decking. Using 1/32" birch ply and T88 structural epoxy. Came out nice, now I just need to decide what wood I want to use for planking.

Love the wood deck. Looks like you know what you are doing, but I have to ask why such a thin ply deck? This is a big boat at 40 pounds will need take some rough handling sometimes, at least mine do.

The 1/32 ply is just a sub deck. I am going to strip plank on top of it, probably with 1/8 cedar. From another Newport build, this is the ply thickness they used. I hope it is enough!

Dain bramaged. I went out and measured the ply thickness, and it is actually 1/16", not 1/32". The old saying about measure twice, cut once should apply to my posts as well!

Brad-
Twice as strong.

I purchased some teak from WAYNE CANTIN for this project. Nice lumber, cut to specs, very reasonable, and shipped quickly.
