Anyone for a Fauvel AV-36?

The first Fauvel I ever saw was Ken Kaye’s (k2k) at the Los Banos scale fly in last spring. I was immediately smitten and ordered the “mini” version (http://www.modellbaumuder.de/fauvelav36minie.htm) to see how I liked it. If all goes well I will get its big brother for Christmas.

I ordered the plane the beginning of May and it arrived mid June. I unpacked it and was stunned! I have built many similar "kits", but the level of prefabrication is unbelievable! In addition to fully sheeted wings, the leading edge, trailing edge and wingtips are attached and sanded. Plus the flying surfaces are cut out and capped and the servo wire is already in the wings! This is an incredible amount of prefabrication, more like an ARF! It is a huge value for the money.

I estimate AUW at 30oz plus whatever it takes to hit the CG. Wing area is ~470in2 so this should be a real floater at ~9-10 oz/ft2.

So far I have glued the wings together. The root matched perfectly with no twist at the tips! Far better than some of the wings I have sheeted.

Ken's Fauvel is definitely pretty cool looking. I was talking with him about it at Los Banos and came away thinking he less than thrilled with it. I may have misunderstood or maybe it just wasn't dialed it yet.

I've been thinking about scratch building one at some point so I'm looking forward to hearing more from you. Especially if you get the big one.

Hey Greg,

You inspired me to take deeper look at my drawings. Here's what I found...

I've got two sets of Fauvel drawings. The first drawing is two pages of marginal quality jpeg images of a 1/4 scale AV-36.

The second drawing is of 3.46M AV-45 motor glider. What's really cool about this drawing is that it's in a vector based pdf format. The drawing will still need to be cleaned up a bit but I was able to load it into Rhino. This means I can create laser cut part fairly easily!

Hi Brian,

You were the one with the really cool Horten wings! My buddies and I were really impressed with them at Los Banos.

The AV-45 looks like it would be a cool motor glider. At 3.46M it would be rather large! It would be a real "Head Turner".

I hope to get this "mini" AV-36 together pretty quickly and see how I like the flight characteristics.

Fauvel models are often made with three piece wings. The fins normally screw onto the ends of the centre section before the tips are fitted. Therefore it is probably the most pack-upable 1/4 scale sailplane there is. Fuselage length is not an issue!

Hello Gordon,

I believe Ken's was constructed as you describe. Definitely makes for a compact large scale plane. ModellbauMuder even makes one 1/3 scale!

Shipping was 45 Euro's. But it turns out you can ship up to 10 of the Mini's planes for that price!

If there is interest I may try to put together a group buy later this year.

Absolutely.

I got a few brief flights, but never really got it sorted out. I am going to try a couple unpowered bungee launches at the slope to sort it out.

Hello Greg -

I'm so glad you got the AV-36. Hopefully there will be some wind at Banos next year so we can slope together.

Hi Ken,

I absolutely look forward to flying together!

I was also hoping to sneak this in at Los Banos too! It is stand off scale....stand way off!

Just thought I'd share this one. Taken a couple of weeks ago at the Deutches Flugwerft Oberschleissheim (http://www.deutsches-museum.de/flugwerft/information/)
