Made this for my son

My son came to me and said, "Daddy, do you have some sticks? I want you to build me a plane." The only balsa I had on hand was a piece of 3/32" sheeting and this is what I came up with. I laid out the wing plan the same way I do for my rc planes, with a straight line for the 25% chord line. It balanced just about perfectly with two pennies.

Flies remarkably well. The little store-bought ones always want to loop. But with zero incidence, this thing will sail right across the yard with wings nice and level. We played catch for about an hour. Great fun for 5 minutes worth of work.

Too cute! Heres one my 4yo girl made so she could have one like dads. Didn't fly so well, but 10 out of ten for style.
Now she's 5, she makes chuck gliders from a pile of styro Limit cores we cut one day, and cardboard tubes, coreflute or whatever. They fly really well. It's nice when the kids show an interest.

She built that when she was 4? Wow! She's definitely got an eye for proportion. Next thing you know she will be carving your plugs.

Passing on the passion...

Hey Russ that's awesome! I have been teaching with my 11 year-old with a Wanderer (Marks Models) which is the same plane I learned on 35 years ago.

He has just a few flights on it and is doing great! Those of us who are into this hobby can border on OCD related to flying - so I'm taking it very slowly, letting him know its okay to crash (but not on purpose) and to just have fun with it. And to insure I won’t turn him off by being too over bearing - I let the matriarch of our flying spot teach him! Like having the all loving grandpa teaching you how to fly...

Nice work from you daughter Simon! Might be a budding slope builder/flyer in the developing.
Save that pic for the family album. Ten years or so on, it will either please her or embarass her to see it again.

Jim.

When my boy was around that age I did the same thing for him. We had great fun! Took some fishing line and attached it to the left wing tip. Put about 4 feet on it, light stuff. Wind it up real good and let er go and those things will fly quite a ways!
