Top Dawg

Although I tried to take a break from building, its just not working. I ordered an ARF 2m glider, but the supplier overseas is out of stock. I ordered an ARF Decathlon, and again the supplier was out of stock. So, I guess I'll just have to build something instead

After a couple of nights going through magazine plans and on line plans, and the stuff buried in my pc I finally found what I was looking for....

The "Top Dawg"

When I printed it to the correct size, its seemed just a little big for my purposes, so I've had to shrink it a bit, and I may shrink it a little more. This is so I can fit more than two planes in the old van

Anyway - it looks like a straight forward build, and a bit different to my other aircraft. As much as I believe in building robust aircraft, this one will be built as light as reasonably possible.

What do you think your final size will be?
My dad built a Top Dawg back in the 60's with (I think) Rand actuators and a Super Tigre .23 (!) It turned out to be just a little too much for us at the time but I've always wanted to revisit the airplane.

Hey there Scott - I think it will be around 800-850 mm wingspan - not a lot smaller than than the original, but small enough to make it easy for me to transport in one piece

I was thinking that the Top-Flite T-D was reproduced a good 5-10 years ago.

This one of those kits or one of the originals?

It was a Ken Willard design, but the plan I'm using is the updated one by M Rittinger for electric. Actually I'll be looking at both (they are pretty much the same anyway).

I'm not working witha kit at all - just using plans (from Outerzone Free Plans), which I think are probably somewhere on the plans thread here as well.

Time to start cutting some wood

Mine flies great at 1/2 power, and with full 300 watts really zips!
Denny built one too and he says the same. Great flying little ship, and with ailerons it can do a lot more than the original did. With the CG in the right spot, it needs very little down stick to hold flat, it'll roll great, and I've darn near thermalled it! Lots of fun for a simple to build ship....

Fuselage

Well - after breaking little sticks repeatedly we have the basic fuse. My first very curved sheeting - I'm rather pleased with the result. It just needs to be trimmed and sanded. Incredibly, everything is straight
'Rue - sorry man! But this will go a bit quicker than the snake I think
