Build Log
2 Meter Horten XII

I don't know what I was thinking when I started the build log over in the scale sailplanes section. Anyway, here's the link to that build log. I'm planning to finish the build here.

The first picture [down below] shows the .4mm (1/64") birch ply being formed around a tube. This piece of plywood will be use to form the rear of the cabin right in front of the propeller/spinner. That would be the area to the left in this picture:

It may not show up very well but the second picture below show the spars being glued in place. The spars are made from a "bargin bag" of spruce I got from Aircraft-Spruce down in southern California. I cut them to size on a table saw. This is much cheaper than buying them cut to size.

Next up...more time on the table saw cutting spars.

p.s. I'll link to the pictures in the other thread below.

looks very cool. Does it need vertical stablizers or is the pod it.

@Asto-No verticals. None necessary!

If they weren't powered, I doubt they would have more than just a faired bubble canopy. The pod was just to cover the engine.

Hi Brian,

thank you for your great job at drawing the "missing parts" and now I see a great job at building the 2 m Ho XII (as usual from you )
In order to motivate you a bit, look once more at my videos of flying my Ho XII, its the #8 of the first series. I hope you like my jobs on this plane too

Horten XII at Vohenstrauss (5 min 9 sec)

...and with onboard cam:

Gastflug der Horten XII bei den Büchelsbergfliegern (5 min 13 sec)

I´m looking forward to the progress (and waiting for the building log of Robbie´s Horti Micro-Elli)

Regards from Uwe,

("the father" of this versitale flying wing model)

I love it! The videos are definitely motivational. My XII is coming together very nicely! This is going to be a great plane.

About the missing parts. You're very welcome! I definitely hope that they work out well for you.

Okay I managed to spend some time in the shop today.

I got some work done on the back of the cabin. I like like how it came out but I did manage to tear up some of the skin. The .4mm plywood is really thin!

I also got most of the spars cut and glued in place. The top spars on the left wing are now sanded to shape. I honestly had forgotten how much fun it is to sand the aft spars. Not!

Anyway, here are the pictures...

A little bit more progress

Well I've made a bit more progress on the XII. I've got a good portion of the top of the left wing panel skinned. I've also got the main and front shear webs glued in place. I'm very happy with how the laser cut shear webs fit!

What have I learned so far. One thing is that I made the face of the sub-leading edge a bit too short. I've corrected the drawings so that the face now extends about ~42mm past the last rib and blends into the tip.

I'm also concerned that I may have removed too much material from the control surfaces. It's obviously very important that they are as ridged as possible to avoid flutter. My plan at this point is to add some carbon fiber to the trailing edge.

are you only cutting these for yourself or will you be selling the laser cut parts+plans?
This 2M one interests me the most, as it would be easier for me to store and haul something that size.

@jonquinn-I'm sure that we could work something out. I'll send you a PM with my contact information.

If you're looking for something small the Micro-Elli may also be an option? Rob has a build log going here. There is also a thread on rc-network.de.
