I fitted a GPS locator as insurance, just in case it goes down somewhere. Was about $65. It seems to work ok as long as the plane comes down in cell coverage, which can be a bit hit 'n miss where I fly.

Heres the flight path. Next flight will be across Backstairs Passage, to Kangaroo Island. Less distance, but over water

Bigger planes are more stable so the G5 was getting an easy ride on it. I am really jealous of this. I love the big flying wings.

What were the specs on your wing that did the "Returns through clouds" (almost) clip Alex?
How much battery were you carrying?

Heres the GPS tracker I was using

This is the BigAss launching in 20 knots. Its bumpy, but you wouldnt notice it. Fly By Wire is active during takeoff. It is literally hands off the sticks. FBW is brilliant!
Hands off slope launch of the BigAss (0 min 47 sec)

I watched the whole video, that was very cool.

Are they speed brakes/spoilers on the wing inboard at the end?

Cheers

Matt

Max distance 24km (15 miles). I engaged the RTH at about 12k out and was a passenger for the last leg of the flight. The autopilot tracked perfectly, right down to zero, and then orbited waiting for me. It was beautiful to see, like a cruise missile, or homing pigeon. At one stage I removed my goggles, put down the RC and walked 100m from the GS. I phoned the plane, and it responded with an SMS of its coordinates. I love this stuff.
Congratulations to Alex for a truly brilliant piece of software and hardware engineering.
Cheers

Hi Psi,
Yes, spoilers. After the first test flight I realized that it needed something to help get down. During the first test flight I was in a spot, as the tip fins I had made were too flimsy, and started to flutter at anything over cruise speed. This wasn't a problem at first, and I proceeded to cruise around and gain height in excellent lift, and messing with the motor, all the while keeping an eye on the tip fins.
When it came time to land after about 40 mins I had 850ft to lose, in lift. I couldn't put the nose down as I got flutter and the tips threatened to rip out! I managed to find some dead air and eventually coaxed her down, to find the RH fin hanging by a thread.
I added a pair of alumimium strips as airbrakes and they work surprisingly well considering their small size.

I have read somewhere, that there are low quality copies of this GPS tracker, out there. These copies should only be able to hold the power for about 24 hours or less.
