Ok, I don't know what it is but this always bugs me:

Is there a proper length to use for the torque rods and tubes? I can see from the drawings that the cut in the aileron is 4" from the root and I can figure out the bends/lengths for the root but what about the outboard bend and tube? I think on my other planes I just made the bend where it looked good and made the tube long enough to just be able to hold the rod for the last 90* bend. If I go by the dwg, 1" - 1.5" looks about right.

Once again I'm over thinking this because I don't want twisty or fluttering ailerons and don't know if this has much effect on those things. I figure while I'm learning I might as well ask. I'll go get a beer and if I don't see a reply by the time I return I'll bend it like before. Starting to see why I take so long to build a plane or two?

Jim ,
When I was suing torque rods they where always a 1/3 into the span of the surface . The only time I ever suffered flutter was with and aerobatic machine and I thought I'd discovered gold with using the plastic from an Ice cream tub as hinge material DOH!!!! damn thing flutterd in a dive and blew 1 aileron clean off ,was able to land it and relpace the hinges but the lesson was learn ,and I quote " ICE LIDS" good for mixing bondo on and not for hinges

Thanks Steve but I don't think that'll work for these ailerons. That would put me over 10" from from the root and over 6" from the break/cut. I think I would for sure be getting past the 4-40 torque rod's ability to hold the torque without twisting. One thing I know I don't like is spongy controls.

I'll use the TLAR method after eyeballing the drawings. It'll do

The 4-40 torque rod's are plenty strong. Flutter is most often caused by one of two things. louse ( sloppy linkage) or the distribution of weight in the aileron its self.

I was originally planning to. But I think I'm going with a non-scale scheme instead.
