This thread has been started in an attempt to help bring the Santa Barbara One Design class into the modern era of on-line everything. I belong to the San Diego Argonauts, who sail at the Model Boat Pond in Mission Bay in beautiful San Diego. I am a relatively new Santa Barbara sailor (maybe a few years) and enjoy the boat for its grace and beauty. Another of my areas of interest is tracking today's fast moving technology, and for starters I hope to be posting a few videos I shot last weekend at our monthly Sail Points races... so stay tuned.

OK, so here's is the 1st of 3 videos of our races last Sunday.... Actually it is just the start and the first weather leg. But if you can do well here then the rest of the race is generally in the bag, as they say. Making mistakes early on in a race can be difficult to overcome... so focus on a good start, keeping your air clear, and getting to the weather mark in good shape. Hopefully these videos will give us all some insights in how to do that.

Race #1 (2 min 55 sec)

The first race wasn't too exciting... pretty much a reach to the weather mark. In this race the wind is not so kind to many of us...

Santa Barbara Race #2 (3 min 23 sec)

Here is the 3rd and last race of the day for the Santa Barbaras. Again the wind had a few tricks up its sleve but I managed to make the best of it. Hope you enjoyed the coverage...

Hi Ken, I second what Allan said, I also belong to the Chicago club, I have 2 completed boats #367 witch is a old cabin style and #1406 witch was built as a smooth deck, also hull #1407 witch is out east having a mold made from it,

OK, here are the 3 Santa Barbara Sail Points races (starts and first weather legs) for the San Diego Argonauts on 7/10/11. As you will see there are some great port tack lifts that pay big dividends for those that are able to capitalize.... So get a good start, sail on the lifts and you will be in fine shape at the weather mark. Enjoy...

Excellent video Ken. I am surprised after the first or second race more of the boats didn't mirror your start tactics. I sail 2 Santa Barbaras here in Toronto Canada and I truly love this boat. Set up properly she will tell you where she wants to go. I will sail the Nats in Buffalo this year and hope one day I can sail out in your territory. Bill - FYI The Nationals in 2012 will take place here at the pond in San Diego during our Sail Week event. Santa Barbaras and a number of other classes including the Soling 50, ODOM, IOM, and Wheeler will be competing during this almost 2 week period. Hope to see you here...
