Nine Eagles Solo Pro 228

Not much info available on this heli, but it reminds me of a CB180D. The 228 is a larger sized four channel fixed pitch single rotor with 45 degree flybar. It appears to be using a new TX, the J5 but also appears to be compatible with the J6.

Specifications
  • Length: 498mm
  • Rotor diameter: 395mm
  • Weight: 250g
  • Transmitter: 2.4GHz
  • Battery: 7.4V 1000mAh

The design is so close to the CB180D that it is difficult to tell the two apart. I am not going to say it is a clone because Nine Eagles is suing Walkera for copying its head design in the CB180D and CB100

The CB180D flies horribly outdoors. Any wind and it drifts off like a kite. Also, it is very difficult to make it fly L circuits: it just won't move. Given that the CB100 itself is more agile than the Solo Pro outdoors, I will not put too much hope in it.

Yeah, this one doesn't interest me that much. Once you start getting into this size category, I think a 90 degree or flybarless set up is best.

Walkera copied the Quark tail drive design, but made "improvements" that proved to be disasters. Now, NE does the same damn thing. I have always felt these Chinese companies have a bunch of bright young mechanical engineers designing their helis that don't know a thing about them. They get the mechanical parts right, but miss all of the subtleties of what makes a good heli.

Can you explain what makes the NE tail design so bad compared to the Quark one?

New video of the 228 (in fact, the first one that I've seen):

Tail looks a little twitchy.

This video does not show the heli in good light. It seems that the tail gyro gain is too high, I hope it is adjustable. We need a video of it flown by a more experienced person.

It's not great conditions to be flying in either. Looks like the same day the 328A was flown, which was way too windy. We want to be able to handle a little wind, but I don't think anybody expects it to fly in those conditions. The gain should be adjustable on the RX, since all of NE's larger helis had pots for this, along with extent. I've said this before...I'm just not crazy about the design. They could have easily made this a shaft drive and 90 degree flybar and made it a good contender. Just an outdated design.

I found an old video of a test flight:

Now on Hitec there is the complete list of spare parts:

This is the only heli in NE's new lineup that isn't really doing it for me. In this size I want a shaft driven tail with pitch control, try a V120D01 and you will never want to go back to a motor driven tail.

I don't understand the reasons to insert those slowmotion sequences...

however it performs well.

Bevel cut gears have lots more contact surface than straight cut gears, thus more friction and resistance. It may not seem like much, but it increases the load on that type of tail motor design which means more heat and more amps going to the tail. That design is also very poor at dissipating heat. The Quark design used a drum and pinion, which has much lower contact area and a coreless motor with internal cooling. Even though it worked pretty well, Hirobo went direct drive when they upgraded.

Shaft drive tails with bevel cut gears work fine for helis with one motor driving the rotor and tail. The extra resistance just means a little more powerful main motor. You may have observed that belt and shaft drive conversion kits are always accompanied by a motor upgrade.

I also question why they would come out with a new flybar equipped heli now? It seems kind of late.

Have a solo pro, and if this one is as good as its little brother, i'm going to buy one. Would love to fly more often outside with a fp.

The Solo Pro 228a is now available but is called a 228p:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Nine-Eagles-N...item3a6e56e7d2

It's bigger than the 328a, which I have, but I'm not really sure what the 228 has going for it? What do you think?
