Some more progress. The V-stab shaped and tail cone top fairing (clear plastic).

Should have left rudder attached. Dang!

And the first carving of the canopy plug out of florist green foam. Needs a bit of shaping still.

The spine will be next. Right after I get the canopy down. That way I'll get the spine at canopy termination right. Maybe by the time you see it again.

Decided to glass and prime portions of the fuse. Foam kept getting damaged.

Figured out how to put the spine on straight and clean. A wood dowel cut in half and an 1/8" channel down the bottom to center on fuse vert porfile.

Final alignments later.

And of course sand, patch, sand.ect x infinity.

Great progress Steve! I just finished covering my fuse and can appretiate how difficult all the curves are. There isn't a single flat panel on that fuse!
But then if it was easy everyone would have an F104, right!?
Nice work...keep plugging (no pun intended) away!

In real life the nose looks ok to my eye. And the drawings, and Chino museum pics I am using...................And Scott's eye.

And, a buddy of mine from years ago, veteran master fabricator.

Also once the panel line and hatches are put on, that will bring the various shape together.

However, I must agree that in the pic it looks short.

Please point out shape concerns as needed. (F-104G)

I want to do this right the first time so i can move to the next ones sooner (Mig 21 and F-105 90mm both) before burn out, or before my wife says, "is that all you do with your spare time?"

Target dates to mold is December 2011. Cooler weather!!!

It will fly well. "Fly" to our group means, it takes off how, and when you want it to, and it lands how, and when you want it to. Plus the wings will be composite, allowing the TE/LE flaps to be easily configured. The idea is to have as close to scale wing size as possible. Minimize drag and not tax the power system as much.

That's the thinking at this point anyway.

Thanks

Steve

I mocked up the wing and wing tank according to the 3 view drawings. They looked small, so I did a calculation using the length of the fuse as my constant to divide by and get percentages for my model.

Drawing wing root size, divided by drawing fuse length...ect

Good news is the wing gets and extra 1" at the root and .5" at the tip to be scale size. Span remains the same.

Wing droop (anti-hedral?) between 10 and 12 degrees.

Enlarged top view drawing a bit off. Will also check H-stab before cutting.

Wing tank was .125" off. I can live with that one. All the side views proportions were correct.
