Mini-Review
Valenta Volcano

This is the 3.7 m all-moulded Valentamodel Volcano (http://www.valentamodel.cz/51a.htm).

I recently re-furbished my Volcano that I had been using as a slope machine with a lump of lead in it's belly (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1028113). I have now re-built her as a lighter glider, with electric assist in case of trouble.

After around 6 hours air time in my "re-born" Volcano, I can report that she is a fantastic thermal machine ! Yesterday was a classic test, I attended an annual fly-in at an inland slope where there was virtually no wind, just strong thermal conditions (with matching strong sink in between) (I know, this should really be in the thermal section). The Volcano was able to out-climb and out-thermal a whole bunch of lightweight polyhedral gas-bags (Birds of Time, Gentle Lady's, etc.). All goes to prove that efficiency beats wing loading, any day! The Volcano was able to roam the sky at speed, get out of sink in a hurry, get up to spec height in no time to allow for some screaming dives and fly-pasts, and translate that energy back into altitude again.

Oh yes - I started the day's flying with the Radian Pro. When I swapped to the Volcano I was able to see an immediate and considerable improvement in altitude I could gain, etc..

Chris,
Are you saying this one is a different version than the one that's been on the market for a few years? if so, what's improved?

No, sorry, bad use of language, it's the same model, I was just thinking of those who might not know the model at all ..

I've had my eye on that plane for a long time, as it is perfect for the type of flying I do. Hoping to be able to buy one soon.

The Valenta Volcano is really a beautiful glider. I have been thinking about getting one from my local dealer (has one available in store). The only thing that has been stoping me has been the weight (of an electric version) and my fears that it would not thermal good enough for weak thermals at my field.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Volcano as a thermal glider, Chris. This makes my decision easier...

I kept the weight down by using a relatively small 4 cell LiPo.

In addition, with my CoG at 116 mm, which is WAY behind the recommended location, I did not need to add any nose weight with the electric version. I would imagine you would need some extra lead to reach the manufacturer's recommendation..
