Greg, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I look forward to seeing you again!

Rod, It was great to see you again, sorry I didn't get a chance to chat more. I'm learning how to say now to timing so that I get more chit-chat time under the bit tent. It'll be great to have you flying with us too.

Gone Fly-ing

Hi All,
Finally back from our family vacation at Clydehurst south of Big Timber on the Boulder River, thus explaining why I wasn't able to participate in the two day ALES event. However, I was able to fly a LOT......fly FISHING that is Had a wonderful time, and hope to be back in the air with my gliders sooner than later.

Am posting a couple of non-ALES related pictures to give evidence for my absence. Hope to see you all at the next event on the 18th.
Blessings,
Arlen

August ALES

Greetings to All!
I was FINALLY able to attend another ALES event at East Helena. It was a clear and sunny day, with nearly zero wind, and increasing temps as the day progressed. It all resulted in some great flying, which also resulted in only 92 points (normalized score) separating 5th place (Me ) from first place, (Jim ) I'm contributing a few of the pictures I took today, and as you'll see, they are less of the planes in the air, and more of the friendship shared on the ground. Thanks again to each one of the Helena guys for putting it all together. Great job!

Oh.....Curtis.....sorry you got called to work and had to leave....and Little John....sorry you were out of state....but at least with the two of you gone, it gave the rest of us an opportunity to finish closer to the top
Blessings!

I often read about whether or not ALES will become a landing contest as quite often it is in other contest formats.

In our August ALES contest if I zeroed out landing scores for everyone the only change to is 2nd and 4th places are swapped.

The contest was a six round contest.
The second place pilot had 5 of 6 landings for 150 bonus points.
The fourth place pilot had 2 of 6 landings for 70 points.

I just thought it was interesting to note.

Flight Groups Size

During the last few contests we've held we started using more flight groups and have found that the contest day in the heat of the summer is much more relaxing.

We normally have 16 pilots or less and had been flying two groups on eight tapes but have found that if we run three groups then the pilots get a break during one round from either flying or timing. I've also started turning down timing requests if they are back-to-back from my flight and this really helps me enjoy the contest more as I'm able to sit back and relax and watch a some rounds during the contest. Watching under the tent is a lot of fun! The commentary is a blast!

Watching a Man-on-Man contest is much more enjoyable than a single launched event due to the simultaneous launch and landings.

Just some ramblings this morning of my recent ALES observations.

Also, ALES League results have been updated:

9th Jon Garber
10th Jim Cooney
11th Jim Loughran

Thank You

Curtis,
Thanks for posting your "ramblings." I was both surprised and encouraged to see my name at #57 out of 269. Not too bad for an old guy who has only competed in a couple of events this year. Also nice to see three familiar names in the top 11
Blessings,
Arlen

P.S: Thought this short ALES video clip was a fun watch!

Thoughts

To all my ALES Friends,
However you express your thoughts and care, they would be much appreciated on behalf of my brother, TIO, who mostly slope soars, but frequents this site quite often. TIO is a high school teacher in Bozeman, and the school he teaches in had a major fire last night Details can be found here:

My thanks in advance
Blessings,

Billings ALES Contest Sept 15th

Here are directions to the Billings ALES contest in Columbus, MT.
http://tailwindgliders.com/ALES%20Billings.html

I think it's just over three hour drive from Walmart parking lot. If anyone would like to convoy down we can meet say next to Burger King in the Walmart Parking lot. I would like to arrive by 8:30 am so I can get a test flight in prior to the 9:30 pilot's meeting. So I'd like to drive out of Walmart at 5am.

The weather forecast is looking great. If we can't catch any thermals perhaps we could catch a fish as it's right next to the Yellowstone river. ;-)

Hope to see you there.

A Visit from a Champion!

Yesterday Marc Gellart, the current NATS ALES champion visited us for some fun flying and lots of soaring and setup tips. It was great to see Marc again as we visited briefly last year. We had a wonderful morning of flying with little wind followed by a nice lunch with our wives.

Marc got more stick time in than anyone, flying anything brought to him.
Here's a couple shots of him flying my "Red Merle" eSupra and Jon's scratch built Jon-E.

We hope to see you next year Marc!

Dang, sure sorry to have missed that. We spent the day at the club field... Was there any notice? Or was it a private deal?
