I like to use a trim iron. Bob mentioned that butane pencil torches work awesome too...

Finally!!!! I got started on my X-Plane!!!

Jacko, I know this is your build thread, but I am posting pix of my progress to hopefully help keep me from loosing momentum. And maybe to see if I can get done before you.

I think/hope now that I have actually started, that I will have it done by this weekend.

So, all I got at this point is...

Gearbox/pinion assembled
Motor mount installed...Thanks again jacko.
And, if it counts...blades on the spinner I'll take what I can get

ESC and control horn fab. next.

Question: I'm going to run a 5S setup in my (soon to be delivered) X-plane. I've got two setups to choose from, both with a KPG25 5.2:1 gearbox:
Alternative #1: NEU 1115/1Y (2800kv)
Alternative #2: ARC 28-58-1 (3180kv)

ESC: CC P125, modified by Joe.
Props in consideration: RFM 15x16 and RFM 16x17slim

What do you Dudes think?

I ran out of solder to finish mine.. Doh. Need to go "organise" some more, its hard to find the leaded stuff in the shops, the non lead stuff sucks ass.

Weighed my X last night, 1204grams, can probably get it under 1200 with some trimming of ESC/Batt wiring, which needs to be done anyway. Feels like it would DS with the best of em!

As you know this is not my area of specialty, but I know of 2 reports from guys snapping ARC 28-58-1 shafts in EDF at 2500W level.
Fans were balanced.

I managed to get a bit more done. Fabricating the control horns was a pain and seemed to take forever to get done. Might have beed a tad easier with the right tools and if I had somewhere besides the dinning room table to work.

So, control horns made and installed.
Esc/motor soldered.
Push rods assembled.

Pretty much servos, RX, balancing, fine tunning, etc is all that's left to do. The worst of it is done...hopefully.

Thanks! Haven't found much info on the 28-58-1...
I think the kv is about right for my setup on 5S, and with the GB "protecting" the shaft from vibration even better than a balanced fan, the shaft will hopefully sustain 3kW....*prayers*

It's more of a vertical rocket thing than horizontal WOT. Haven't given top speed a thought, resting assured that speed will be sufficient
But: it would be interesting to put in some extra cells and use one of Markus' 8.5*20 props....
