Aluminum covering.. yes or no....

Hi I am in the middle of a project. I like to know where can I get aluminum foil to cover the craft instead of Monokote. I want to have that metallic look. The craft is made out of balsa...Any idea?
I found aplace in Florida but they wont ship to Canada or accept PayPal from Canada.

Thanks

Aluminum foil would be far too fragile. It will also add more weight than ou want or need. Ultracote makes a Chrome polyester shrink covering that will suit you needs fine:

They also make a silver for a more matte/metallic look if you don't want a mirror finish.

Art Johnson years ago discussed in RCM his aluminum covered Seversky P-35 which was entered in Top Gun. It was thin sticky backed sheet. While aluminum foil is fragile... I'm pretty sure it's much lighter than the iron coverings of the same dimensions.

Maybe this guy will ship to Canada. http://www.flitemetal.com/

Don't construe this to be a recommendation for this company. It is known for slow shipping and "lost" orders. It may be your best shot, unless you know somebody in the States that can order from Meister, and then send it to you.

Be aware that when using either product, the model must be glassed first. The surface needs to be perfect, just as if you were going to paint.

I've read about someone who covers models with foil. Sprays first with 3m77, then rubs the foil down. I don't think foil would weigh too much, I reakon it would weigh similar to monokote etc

Chrome Monokote, skuffed up with a Scotchbrite pad, and applied in panels.

Has anyone tried using 3M 77 to hold actual aluminum foil onto their plane? Wouldn't it be just like the Flitemetal concept?

Glue adhesion can be a problem.

Try it, and set your sample in the hot sun, for a few hours. If it works, fine. If not, you haven't ruined a model.

"Haole "

From another Haole. Thanks. Graduated Kaimuki Hi on Oahu, and attended UH for a short while before my tour in the Marines.

So is it the glue that's the problem? Is there something else that would be easier to apply and stick better? Or, is it the weight of the aluminum foil that is the problem?

Glue CAN be a problem. So can the durability of the foil.

Looking good Les. How much did you overlap the panels?
Did you use fine line tape to mark the panels?
Any input appreciated.

Cheers

"How much did you overlap the panels?"

Long time ago, but as I recall, about 1/8 inch. Just enough to ensure no gap between panels.

"Did you use fine line tape to mark the panels?"

No. That was the purpose of the opposing skuffing, to emphasize panel seperation.
