my Sarab is built heavy and has a gopro on board.
the 28 motors listed on the multiwiicopter site works fine with the 10x4.5 props. draws 12amps on hover using 3S so expect at least 10min on 2200mhr.
good reliable setup

Here's my Scarab V.2 (since I lost the first R.I.P. )

Fully loaded with GoPro it's ~1000 grams (~2.2 pounds)
- 2100mah 3s 25c
- KEDA 20-22L motors
- 10x4.5 Props
- Turnigy Plush 10 ESCs
- GoPro HD with Sunex lens mod
- Servos stabilized (tilt and pitch) mount
- Orange RX 9ch RX
- JR 11x transmitter
- Paris board v.3 with MP+ and BMA180
- Moongel for the camera mount
- Removable LED light strips for low light ops
- BMS V-Tail mixer to drive the camera stabilization servos (they both work together for proper pitch and roll)

I was cautious to build the Scarab as lightweight as possible ( as it was designed/intended). Also tried to keep most of the mass in the center for even load and balance.

Here are some photos of my new Scarab complete with the camera mount and camera.

Hi Quadslo,

I started shooting some videos this morning with poor results, there's some bad vibrations being translated into the camera pratically ruining the videos - this is with moongel too - I'm wondering if there's such a thing as too much moongel?

About the Sunex lens, I couldn't focus it properly using live video out. I went with the still photo focusing method where I took a pic, and then rotated the lens an 1/8 of a turn, and then took another pic, etc. I believe the still photos and video are very clear now - just need to fix the camera mount/vibrations (balance the props etc). :P

Nice build guys. Wondering about the legs and how strong they are. I'm getting allot better with my landings but still allot of room for improvement. If the legs break are there easy replacements available?

Thank's

Crazyj, the best result for Moongel are if the camera is placed on top of the gel. And you shouldn't tighten it to much with velcro or elastic. I've tried two layers of gel and it was worse!

Chad2323, legs are quite strong. And yes, you can get replacement parts.

Here's my first attempt with shooting some decent video with the Scarab quad X. I think my GoPro's lens needs to be adjusted - it's not as clear as it used to be (before I swapped to/from the sunex lens).

Well, my Scarab was doing great today at the local flying field. Then, all of a sudden, it decided to fall out of the sky on the 6th flight. I'm chalking it up to the RX (silly me I was using one of the new Orange 9ch RX from HK). I'm going back to my AR7010 with satellite RX mounted on the rear landing gear leg.

The crash damage wasn't very bad, two of the booms (left-front and left-right) were bent a little bit and one of the carbon landing gears cracked. The Scarab fell from about 25 feet up straight down on to it's legs.

I'm glad the Scarab is so easy to work with, only a few minutes of effort will have it back in business.

For my next trick, I'm going to buy a whole FPV setup and install it on my Scarab (or larger quad). The FPV gear/setup will be similar to my friends blog here:

Cheers,
Jason
