Thoughts about building a BJ-1b Duster?

Hi all:

I recently found a free plan of the BJ-1b Duster (1/4 Scale). I gotta say, I fell in love with the look of that glider. Is there anyone out there who has built one or can give me any info about them? If so, any help would be really appreciated.

Regards and good flights

Dave.

I know this isn't exactly what you asked for but there are two scale kits here

http://www.vintagesailplaner.com/BJDuster.html

I assume they're still making them. I wanted to order a short kit last year and was told they were waiting for stuff from the laser cutter, but I've heard nothing since. I know Jim was in a very bad car crash which left him with damaged hands. Hope it works out for you (and Jim)

Edit.

More info about Duster here http://www.scalesoaring.co.uk/VINTAG...usterDocs.html

Ive got a nearly completed Full Scale and 1/4 scale Duster if I can provide any assistance with questions. My 1/4 scale is a scratch build from Jim's early (like 18years ago) plans.

Roger: Thanks a lot for the links but I really want to build this one from scratch. If you do get a kit tho please inform us of your build, it would be nice to watch

Craig: I got the same plans off of the scale soaring site. I also found some notes from Bengt jansson correcting many of the plans. He claims there are 12 but I only found one of the fuselage. Congrats in your build and I would love to see some flying vids

Regards and good landings

Dave

Andy Smith of AU and I started down the Duster design road last Fall.
We got great assistance from the Original designer Bengt Jansson, who is
living in Sweden now.

Andy got involved in other interests and has not completed his TEST build.
I did the Fuse and Wing in CAD and Andy has cut most parts for the Fuse
on his laser cutter.
http://www.rcforums.com.au/forum/vie...php?f=56&t=112

The wing is intended for a Unique Spar implementation.
Andy's idea is to create the spar from numerous Ply parts stacked and glued
all with Tabs and Slots for locking and Keying them together.

On the USA side of the effort, I found an amenable laser cutter and had all my
CAD parts zapped off but During that period Family maters came to a head
and I have decided to MOVE closer to the Grand Kids, about 2400 miles away !
So any LARGE build thoughts went on the BACK BURNER.

If I was Younger and a bit more Athletically "Sized" and NOT moving across the country, I would BUY Craigs, Full sized Duster project.
He does Great work on both Models and Full sized planes that his is currently flying ! see post above.

Back to the Duster:
We didn't want to compete with Jim Ealys offerings so we opted for the 5M size.

I know that Bengt is anxious to see more Duster model's joining in the Aero Tow events.

I would be currious to know how any modelers delt with the 3 piece wing. The full size Duser has a 7' center section that is permently attached to the fuse with two 18' outer panels. That fact made for some interesting trailers. I built my 1/4 scale with with a natual bend in the panel to simulate the flat center section. I started that project back about 1973 before getting side tracked building a Pietenpol Aircamper. Now at this point in time many years later I'm not sure that I would do it that way again.

The Briglieb BG-12A had a three-piece wing arrangement, with the center-section semi-permanently mounted on the fuselage. The later 2-piece wing models were better performers and much more popular, though.

Craig: My intention is to build my 5M version SCALE .
So it will have the Center section just like the full sized one.
I also want to see if I can create strong enough brackets to Bolt it together like the real one also.

You HAVE the full sized plans.
What is the reason for hesitating on the model ?

Bengt Jansson designed the 3 piece wing to accommodate what HE SAW as
a lot of rigging assistance from pilots' WIVES !
That was back in the 60's when gals weren't trying to be as Macho as these days !
A Lighter wing section to Handle and tote around for anyone putting it together at the field.

At the moment I'm building a few RES aircraft and slowly working my way back to the scale subjects. I left off with the Duster model when I started the full size one allthough I have the model quite aways along. The Full size Duster went on hold because of the Pietenpol but fortunitly I did complete the Piet. I have plenty of projects both full scale and Modeling, maybe not so good. I am completing some though so maybe there's still hope for me I will be prepairing the Sperber Jr. for flight again and have been invited to attend an aerotow event in July.

That's the one, Bob! I extended a personal invite to Craig and his Sperber to attend. Can't wait to see the gorgeous Sperber up in the air again, after so long.

BTW, doesn't Frank Smith fly a quarter-scale Duster, from the Ealy plan? Unfortunately, his daughter's graduation conflicts with Monroe this year. Maybe he'll have it at Mission.
