My $10 Harbor Freight kite flight video
This project started with a $10 two line stunt kite (65 in. WS) from Harbor Freight, a $1 light weight 24 in. level from a Dollar store, 28 34 brushless motor (from headsuprc) about $20 and a 10x8 slow fly prop. I started with a rudder and elevator but no longer use an elevator, it is just as easy to control pitch with motor speed (the small elevator is not effective with such a large surface area, the down side is it will not loop without the elevator).
My lastest version was to move the motor up on the post, after moving the motor I have not broke a prop. I am also flying a home made Rogallo wing on the same frame.

How about a little more info...whats the angle of incidence of the kite? Where did the CG work out to be? Thanks, Tim AG4RZ |

Details on my rc stunt kite
Fuselage is a dollar store 24 inch level, 2 oz. Motor is 2834-9 2.6 oz, 900Kv.
30 amp ESC, 1800 mAh lipo, I have used 10x8 and 11x5.5 props. pylon is 17.5 in tall and 7.75 in. back from front of the level, motor is mounted as tractor 6 in. up on the post. The post is 1.5 x 1/4 in. wood. Angle of incidence is 10 degrees. Vertical stab. is 7 in. high by 5 in. including the 2 in. rudder. Horizontal is 9 x 5 with 2 in. elevator (at present I am not using the elevator). Both vert. and horizontal are made of coroplast. The COG is 15 in. back from the tip of the kite and located on the center of the verical post. The front of the battery is 10 in. back from the front of the level. I have light wires from midway down the outer kite rods to the fuselage, I adjust the length of these wires as needed for trim. I also add a wire to the rear tip of the kite to the top of the vert. stab. Ready to fly weight is 28 oz. I am now using a Rogallo wing ( homemade) and it seems to fly better than the stunt kite, center beam is 36 in. outer rods are 42 in., 56 in. wide at the back. If you have questions, I will try to answer them. |
