Tom,

Nice write up. However with these micros it is all about weight to thrust ratio and not RPM at 0* pitch. For example on my 4G6 with HP08 rewind 4 turns 4 strands 32AWG delta does 250 grams of thrust with a 12T pinion and is 18,680kv. That is +2Gs of thrust and it moves like a rocket.

You may find that with even a smaller pinion your TA915 will give higher thrust at 12* pitch. No one has measured the thrust capability of the TA915 so far so we have no comparison.

Good Luck, Don

Hi Don,

Thanks.

We always see on the threads about the highest head speed possible
needed for 3D but I see thrust to be important also. What good is say 4,500 RPM
without enough thrust. That is what seemed to be the problem with the weaker HP08 motors. High head speed but not enough torque.

Your HP08 rewind sounds very powerful.
How did you measure your thrust?
If this is something I can do? If so I will measure thrust and add it to the review.

Tom,

I just use a scale and put a fairly heavy book or object on it and strap the heli to the book and scale. This way the scale doesn't take off on positive thrust Then with the heli, battery, book and scale just zero the scale and your ready to go. One thing is don't do full thrust for very long as it is hard on the batteries and they will droop a lot plus things might want to heat up. So just long enough to get a good reading. My rewinds do 250 grams and the strong 2S units have done 300 grams but figuring in the weight difference is what counts. You will need the highest C rating batteries you can get to get good numbers.

Good Luck, Don

Thrust Test

I just did a thrust test for the Turbo Ace 915 14T w/XP-12A Version 2 ESC
and the Eflight Blade mCPX.
See the "Thrust Test" section in my review and the pictures.

Thanks Tom I was wondering about the thrust numbers on these outrunners.

I wonder if using a smaller gear would make the thrust numbers go up as Dbennettya suggested.

I get better head speeds using the 900mah 25C's.

Jon,

That would be great! It would have so much torque and head speed
the heli would probably explode!
The best outrunner motor I have seen for the mCPX is the Turbo Ace 4.5g outrunner motor. Very light and powerful.
I do have one here. Hmmm.....

Your welcome.
I may test a 12T for Dbennettya to get the thrust, head speed, and flight time for it.

Funny how I got more thrust with the 22C battery then I did with the 25C battery.

Not too suprising as 0.5 x 25 = 12.5A and 0.6 x 22 = 13.2A so the 22C probably has lower internal impedance.

Go for it! I am using an AEO 4.6g outrunner and it is a BEAST. Reduced weight + more power =
