I used to own and fly a Century Predator Heli with a Wren MW54 fitted. The engine came as a kit, as it was a bit cheaper that way...plus I could be in a position to do any bearing changes myself.

It was easily the pinnacle of my RC flying, lovely machine to own. I wasnt suprised at how easy the Wren was to look after, theres little to go wrong. Just a case of keeping the fuel nice and clean and filtered...and that was it. The only gripe was the fuel tank that came with the conversion kit...stupid idea for the fuel line/bung. You want something way more secure than that.

I sold the whole thing after a while, just didnt want to stuff the thing into the ground if it went wrong. I also didnt like the flight times...10 mins if I was lucky. I had the same type of heli with a petrol engine that could do almost an hour on ONE tankfull.

Currently about to embark on my own build turbine got the books on the subject...compressor is a Garrett out of a Landrover turbo, turbine will be made by me...its purely for the hell of it. I will make a more improved engine, I think getting the compressor, combustor/vaporiser, NGV and turbine from suppliers is a good idea...FADEC would be nice.

I just want to do a self build first, have always wanted to do this

Not that I am anywhere NEAR ready for one of these, I cannot wait to see how well hobbyking does in this particular part of our already amazing hobby.

Waiver, we don't need no stinking waver

I wonder how many users will actually get one. I didn't even know you needed one until recently.

In the US you do need it, if you want to fly at a AMA sanctioned field or event. In Canada you dont need it unless you fly in the States.

Is the Apollo XI field in the Sepulveda basin a sanctioned AMA field?

Hope it is since I don't want to be around a bunch of turbine newbs that don't have insurance and most likely the skills to operate one safely.

RCvertt, I don't find that funny - the last thing we need is people flying their turbines at parks or anywhere that isn't a designated flying field (club). You may laugh at the rules and the whole FAA thing but its serious. I am sure the many other turbine fliers having fun and being safe with the waiver wouldn't like seeing someone endangering there hobby!

even if turbines come down in price i doubt you will see them in the hands of the masses as even if one could buy a turbine for $1000 new it will still cost $2,000 - $3,000 just for an airframe to stick it in to plus the rest for all the bits that go with it

WAGliderGuy, sorry about that. The not needing wavers thing was meant sarcastically. Doesn't always come across that way in typed sentences.

I tried google to find a list of AMA sanctioned places to fly to see if my site was one of them but it didn't seam to help me out much. I wouldn't really want to fly at a place that wasn't sanctioned and would keep my eyes open perhaps a little more if I knew uninsured people could fly turbines in the area.

I personally think you should have to show proof of AMA membership to a retailer before you can purchase one.
