I'm probably going to trade up one of my DX7's for a DX8, rather than a DX7S.

It would make a good upgrade from a DX6i and is a good replacement for the current DX7, but with the current 2 RX deal with the DX8, the numbers favor the DX8 and lack of backlighting was a dealbreaker for me.

I preordered one. For me it came down to simple math. I have a DX7 that I can send in to get DSMX for $75. I don't really need it, but would probably do it. I can buy a DX7S for $290 shipped. I can sell my old DX7 for $150,the AR 8000 for $80and the new one only cost me $60. Even with the extra AR 8000 the DX8 would cost me $430, sell 2 AR 8000 for $80, and it cost me $150 or so. Maybe less if I sold the telemetry module. Although I would rather have the DX8, I have never, and don't see myself ever using 8 channels. Also, while the backlight looks cool, I have never had a situation when I needed one. For $100 extra, I would rather buy another 3DHS buckhuck.

You may not see yourself using 8 channels BUT it's not about the channels but all the other extra stuff it's got. Mixing capabilities and 3 position switches are but a few things the dx8 has over the dx7s

Price won't cost you a plane, even the 400-500$ tx cost planes sometimes. If you are serious about the hobby then buy the best you can now so you don't have to buy another later.

A good one to start with is the dx6i. It has enough that you would need right now, but if you are going to have more planes later on and get more into the hobby i would go with the DX7/DX7s/DX8.

This is the advice I received basically unanimously from local rc people as well as this forum. I bought a dx8 when I only had 1 3ch plane! I'll be building a fun cub next, that will use all 8 channels (doesn't have to but I figure I might as well use my ar8000!). Plenty of use for mixes and things on that plane as well. Then I'll be on to a 3d trainer or two, more mixing there.

Right this minute the dx8 is way too much radio for me, but I look forward to growing into it and into the hobby.

Another plus of just getting the best you can afford is most radios have good resale value, you can make most of your money back if you decide the hobby is not for you, or you just move on to something else.

The DX6i is good, but if you scratchbuild planes with Elevons, the lack of mixes can be limiting... that and with $10 Knock off RX's available, the 10 model memory can fill up fast.

If you think your going to be serious about sailplanes consider the Airtronics SD-10G, it will be all you need for years to come.

Well, more math. With the extra receiver, and a great deal at an online vendor for the DX8 for $397 shipped I have changed my mind. Now I am at $397 less 2 AR8000 ($160) less telemetry ($40) less DX7 ($150) now I am at $47 to move up from a DX7 to a DX8. I have canceled my DX7S order and ordered the DX8. Apparently there are only a few with the extra receivers going out to each dealer, but I managed to get one.

I crunched the numbers myself, and came up with the same conclusion and pulled the Trigger on a DX8.

Wholesales Trains Member price: $365 + Handling, but Free shipping (over $150 order) for a DX8, TM1000 Telemetry and 2 AR8000's.

I'll sell my spare DX7 for $150 Net and the other stuff market price and Trade up from a DX7 for $50... That's what Backlight kit for my DX7 costs.

Yeah, nice find there. I thought $380 plus shipping was a bargain, that is even better. When you can upgrade to DX8 cheaper then either adding a backlight, or sending in for DSMX, it's a no brainer.

Couple questions for you guys. Do you know if the dx7s will be offered in a TX only version? Also, what is the cheapest sight out there selling or preordering it? And when is it supposed to drop?

Trap,

Wholesale trains "member" price is $262.50 ($300 - $37.50 instant rebate), with an AR8000, $2 Handling Change and Free shipping. I'm sure that is the cheapest on the net.

Sell the AR8000 for $70 and you are looking at around $195.

They don't have a date yet or sell it without a RX.

The DX8 + 2 RX's and Telemetry for $367 ($430- $65 +$2)is still a better deal (you get a DX8 for the price of a DX7S, after you sell the extras).
