The reason I am hesitating to put the brushless motor in is because it will be a completely different airplane, and will lose that sweet floaty quality because of the heavier battery. What is really needed is a 1s motor that is just a little more powerful. The new MSRx has such a motor, that is the same diameter but longer. Of course you would have to change out the 8-tooth pinion for the 9-tooth one. Reports I have heard is that it is not any more reliable than the MSR motor. Is the SX motor the same length as the stock one? If that is the case, then the MSRx motor might be significantly more powerful. You probably already know this, but the Corsair/Mustang motor is the same as the MSR main blade motor, and is also the same as the tail rotor motor on the 120SR. Apparently, the one on the MSRx is more powerful. I wonder what would happen if a guy used a motor from a MCPx. Would the FET's on the Corsair board be able to handle the extra current? That would definitely have more power and solve the tail-heavy issue. |

A couple thoughts here:
1) I agree w/ you on going brushless and 2S - I don't think it's necessary on this bird. LIke you, I like the floaty scale flying characteristics. 2) The MSRX motor is actually longer than the stock UM Corsair/P51 motors and has a gear on the end with a different number of teeth. I don't know what the diameter is, but I think it is slightly thinner - but could be wrong on that. The bigger issue would be getting it in. I had a devil of a time getting the old motor out and new one in due to the foam "wall" underneath the brick. I ended up cutting enough of it out to wedge the old motor out and the new one in. I want to wait to see the new Spitfire set up and see if there's an opportunity - down the line - to get the Spit guts into the corsair. LIke Tommy, I swapped out the aileron servos with the AS3X compatable ones from my old GeeBee (only because I had them lying around). For me, power is less an issue than the ability to get a little more wind tolerance. |

The wood idea is a good one. I already glued and taped the wing. I added tape to both side the even things out. I think the wing might be stronger then before, well at least theres less flex. I'm gonna fly it until the bird is dead, then rebuild and do it again.
Next time, I'm gonna use a oval shape piece of balsa for my motor mount. It should be a little easier to install and look a little better to. |
