It will work but you probably will have to do a little math like dividing the reading by the number of propeller blades to get the actual propeller rpm.

Thats a contact tach, and also uses reflective tape to "see" RPM's.

Its a craap shoot if it will work with a prop against a well lit background.
I have tried several different makes, no joy with contact, and you ruin a props balance using a "stick on" piece of reflective tape

It says its for "contact and non-contact measurement".

I understand.
Contact : If you try the contact tips, you will burn them up and also burn your shaft on higher kv motors

Non-contact : If you try a prop, you might be forced to stick on a reflective tape so the photosenser reads a revolution. This tape brings a perfectly good prop into an unbalanced situation, and you dont want to get RPM's off of an unbalanced assembly.

I reccomend any one or both of the following;

1. ICE ESC's

2. Eagle Tree data recorder

I have been assuming the RPM readings from the Ice is fairly accurate since the ESC must know the RPM for timing etc. Is this a safe assumption? Or should I take it with a grain of salt as with the other measurements like amps?

There isnt anyone out there that I have ever heard or read of, that disputes the accuracy of the ICE for RPM readings. Including myself.

Good deal, thanks.

I would get the meter and hang on to it if it works. The problem with buying a new piece of test equipment that isn't proven is that you have to have another instrument taking the same readings to get any confidence that it is correct.
