UM Champ - on-board video

Here's my first attempt at on-board video on a UM plane.

I decided to mount a fully-cased keychain cam on top of my modded Champ just to see how she handles the load. Champ is powered by a Solo Pro motor w/5043 prop & Hyp 180 'M' cell. The plane's flying weight is 47g, and the the fully-cased cam weighs 15g. AUW is 62g. I'm taking off to the north from my north yard, then flying over my east & south yards. When flying south, you can see my woods off to the left. The grass was a bit too long, so my landings aren't very pretty. I plan to shoot some more tomorrow - this time with the cam angled downward maybe 5-10 degrees. The prop artifact isn't as bad as I was expecting it to be. I need to fly much more smoothly, however...

Nice! Very good video. It's so nice to be able to fly over our house while taking a video from above! The Champ is probably the best UM for that job. One little word of caution, make sure the camera is stuck well on the plane. I've lost one in flight! And from a Vapor

You really have a nice place with lots of open space to fly from. Heck, I could see myself flying some bigger birds from that nice dead end street!

Nice video! Those keychain cams are great. I used one on my Super Cub in front of my house and was impressed with the quality.

Check it out.

RG & Turnerm,

Thanks! I think I have found my newest addiction....

RG - the road works for micros, but with the power lines on both sides & the set that crosses the road, I wouldn't want to try anything much larger. However....I am thinking about putting a UM-sized hard-surface strip in my north yard. BTW - loved the Stryker video! Thanks!

Turnerm - great video! Here's my latest with the Champ. I mounted the cam under the belly, and angled it downward. Was a bit turbulent up there! Also - check out my Mossie & PA Extra video blog threads.

Joel - how do you like the mossie? I've had my eye on that one as well. But I'll probably skip it and wait for the Sbach. That looks to be one sweet little plane doesn't it??

I'll check out your blog... Keep the videos coming. Lots of fun!

Turnerm,

I enjoy flying the Mossie. It flies more like a warbird than a foamie - in contrast to, say, the UM P-51 - which flies more like an aileron trainer than a warbird. It doesn't handle the wind as well as the XP or Beast, but it's a lot of fun when there's no more than a light breeze. If you'd like more info, meet me over on my Mossie thread.

I pre-ordered an Sbach right away. I can hardly wait! Given the 4.9A b/l ESC, installing a hotter motor will be easy. I'm thinking UM pylon racing. We could have four classes: stock, batteries & props, unlimited power systems, and unlimited airframe & power. All except for the latter would have to use stock airframes & bricks. The unlimited A & P would allow clipped wings, shortened vertical & horizontal stabs, and custom streamlining.
