Question
How do you fly: thumb or with two fingers?

Hi Guys,

Do you control your transmitter with your thumb or with two fingers (thumb plus index finger) per stick?

The reason that I am asking is that I have always flown my planes with just my thumbs (flying style is sport and 3D if that makes a difference). A few people at my field have said that is incorrect and I should be controlling the transmitter with two fingers per stick.

I have spent a lot of time with my sim practicing with two fingers per stick and have noticed I have a sense of more control. However, it also feels uncomfortable in that I am not used to it and often “trip” over my own fingers or have them get in the way of where I want to move the sticks.

I am only 1 year into the hobby and want to ensure I set myself up for success down the line. Any thoughts? Is there a right or wrong way or does it come down to personal preference?

Really appreciate your input.

With my thumbs, but I never used a tray or strap with my radio so I haven't had the opportunity to try any other way.

P.S. I do not think there is a right or wrong way, whatever works best for you I would say.

Thumbs. I use a strap just for safety. Never used a tray.

I pinch the stick (so 2 fingers). Its said or recommended that pinching the stick is better for 3D since there is less chance of letting go the sticks or slipping off.

At the end of the day its a user prefference thing.

I'm one of only a few who use both thumb and finger. As far as I know I'm the only one at my club who flies this way, which includes a tray. The reason for this is that when I first started this hobby a couple of years ago I spent a lot of time on my PC flying the sim. The way I do this is with it resting on my lap as I sit here flying. So I guess this is the way it seems natural and just continue when actually flying.

This is always a good topic to bring up so we can see if the trends are changing.

I tried fingers but once I got serious about 3D I found that thumbs were the only way to go. Fingers may be good for precision flying like FAI.

The trend isn't changing. It never will.
Some do it one way, and swear by it and some do it the other way and swear by it.
For every person who switches one way, there's another who switched the other.
Can rationalize your choice a zillion different ways, but it's still just a personal preference.

Yupper.

I do both.

When warm and don't need gloves - Pinch (Thumb & Forefinger)

If cold - Gloves and thumb only.

Used to be thumbs only, then switched to thumb and forefinger.

Thumb and finger guy.

I do not use either a tray or a neck strap.

I use the, "two in the pi..."

Oh we are talking about something else.

I used the Thumb method and have been practicing the pinch method for 3D.
