New open launch project
Ok chaps !
Despite the annoying boiler problems holding up building of my steam plant , I have started work on my latest launch project (no name as yet ).
She is going to be an open launch , as I have allready built the Allison I and II with closed saloons , and want to do something different
So having failed to find a hull with the correct dimentions , and never being one to go for the easy option , I decided to cut about my Mobile Marine hull to increase the width and reprofile the bow
At least it will be unique !
I started by slitting out the keel and chopping the pointed section of bows off.
I then used alloy strips screwed in place to increase width by 2 inches.
At the same time I gave her a more rounded plan view , as she was rather slab sided.
Next I bonded strips of beech into the top edges of the hull to support the more rounded profile.
I then glassed in the cut sections , and when set , removed the alloy strips and reinforced the joint with more glass layers.
The new bow shape was pulled and taped together , glued and reinforced with more fiberglass.
Next up will be some sanding and filling to finish the bottom profile
I am going to then mark out and cut a slot at the rear of the keel and build the propshaft exit area from some nice 1.6mm fiberglass sheet I got recently, this will be used to form the rear of the keel and propshaft fairing and rudder mounting.
So the hull is now some 47 inches long and 10 inches wide instead of the rather tight 8 inches it was.
More soon .

a Good supplier of fiberglass sheet is http://www.mickreevesmodels.co.uk/~m...ccessories.htm
PRO-SKIN is epoxy-glass sheet which has been moulded under high pressure and heat and is great stuff you will also find some hard to get bits on this page from nice ball links to ceramic blankets to very small self tapers. I use the thinnest pro skin 0.2mm to laminate decks that where wood coverd or to make roof tops etc it paints fantastic.

Well, this is going to be something new and different!

Today was mostly a day of primer , wet sanding , more primer , more wet sanding ,and so on till I got the hull smoothed out to my satisfaction
Then one of the interesting parts !
I made up the end of the keel /prop shaft mount/rudder fairing.
I made this from fiberglass sheet , beech wood and bonded it all together.
The brass prop tube is bonded in place , and the 4mm x 7mm x 2.5mm stainless sheilded ball bearings that will support the propshaft are ordered. They are a tight fit into the prop tube.
I will use two propshafts to get a nice smoothe run from engine to prop , as on my last launch
I then bonded the assembly into a slot cut into the hull and faired it in with more filler . Then more primer , wet sanding ,primer , wet sanding and so on.
I will be making a brass rudder support to screw into the back of the keel and making the rudder next .

Really fine modification.
I have a question / observation: Will the air bonded into the skeg not add a degree of buoyancy where you don't really need it? Or will it make no odds?

With the big lump of brass hanging off the bottom in the form of the rudder support , I think it will make no difference.

Ok Chaps !
Now the build is cooking on gas !
I eventually got the boiler today
I have allready fitted it with the whistle and pressure sensor for my automatic gas system , So next up will be building the plant onto a base and pipework for everything.
I am cutting out the ply formers and top deck for the hull and they are going to be bonded to the hull , I will lay the 1.6mm wood on top of the ply later in the build.
Ok , lots to do , but here are some pictures of the bits of steam plant to be going on with
