Prop Comparison

Today, I've got the chance to try out a Gemfan 13x6.5e prop, which looks almost identical to the APC 13x6.5e. In the attached 2 photos, the Gemfan one is on the right side, while the APC one is on the left.

Test Set-up:
- AX3715 KV1000 motor, weight with accessaries: 125 grams;
- Hobbywing 40A ESC;
- Gemfan 13x6.5e;
- Hobbyking Zippy Lipo 20C 2200 mAh;
- Spektrum DX7, Spektrum AR6100e

ax3715kv1000gfprop.mp4 (1 min 51 sec)

It seems to me that the Gemfan prop is about 10% less efficient than the APC one. The former draws about 20A to generate 1100 gram thrust while the latter does about 18A. The former peaks roughly at 1650 grams of thrust while the latter does so at 1850 grams. And the amp draws in both cases are about the same -- 44A.

AX3715 KV870 Motor Test

OK, I tested the recommended KV870 version of the motor.

Test Set-up:
- AX3715 KV1000 motor, weight with accessaries: 125 grams;
- Hobbywing 40A ESC;
- 13x6.5e propellor;
- Hobbyking Zippy Lipo 20C 2200 mAh;
- Spektrum DX7, Spektrum AR6100e

The first is with an APC 13x6.5e prop, and the second with a Gemfan 13x6.5e prop.

ax3715kv820apcprop.mp4 (2 min 17 sec)

ax3715kv820gfprop.mp4 (2 min 23 sec)

My observations:
- the system reaches its maximum power output at roughly 80% throttle;
- with the APC prop, the system draws about 17A to generate 1100 gram thrust;
- with the APC prop, the system peaks at 25A and 1400 gram thrust;
- with the Gemfan prop, the system draws about 19A to generate 1100 gram thrust; and
- with teh Gemfan prpo, the system peaks at about 27A and 1300 gram thrust.

My conclusion: with a 13-inch prop, the kv is too low to utilize the potential of the battery and probably the motor. Maybe a larger prop will get more power out of the system.

feda

P.s., it is interesting to note that the kv870 version seems to be a more efficient, i.e., drawing less power to genereate a certain amount of thrust, motor than the kv1000 version.

Apparently my kit was a V2 version. Build went well. Maidened yesturday. Few tics of elevator and she was good to go. This was my second plank build. My first being a 33" 3dhs Edge foamy. Over all I was very impressed with how it flies. Straight out of the box I could fly every manouver I could with my 33". I was a bit intimidated at first I have never flown anything that size ( started flying planks in January with my 33' ).

Observations: KE very nice. Hands off hovered well! Snap rolls and tumbles where a joy. Easy to recover from but certainly has some mass behind it. Flies very well in the wind. Can really fly along nice and slow. Unlimited vertical with the 12x6e on my Hacker A30-12l V2. 5min flights took 1200mah out of 2100mah packs.

Overall I am very satisfied with the Skywing MXS. Ill post some pics of my build later on.

Build Notes: The firewall on my unit was incorrectly marked. Was off to the left side of the airframe rather badly. My kit also included revised wings which the manual made no note of. English manual would be very nice. Especially for noobies like me! Not that its hard to figure out but it would certainly help.
My build came in at 38oz with no weight saving measures taken.

Brubache, out of curiosity, what's different with the v2 wings?

The V2 adds reinforced landing gear area and wings have slightly shorter ailerons and there is a foam block at the inside edge against the fuse. Adds a more scale look I suppose.

Very nice pics Brubache!!

Finally started my V1 build last night. Re-enforced the LG assembly with solid EPP blocks glued in under the skin fore and aft and PU'd the gear into plage. Looks nice and solid.

Going to put slightly bigger wheels on as I find this one of the best mods to any plane I fly from rough grass fields.

Might up the heft of the wing tube too - sounds like some V1's have cracked the very light tube supplied.

Any other mods to V1 people recommend?

Hi Unlvace. The work is all covered up by the outer EPP skin.

I still have to do the mod on my friends kit, and when I do I'll take a few pics.

Cheers!

New to this thread and aircraft. Appears to be what I have been looking for.

Is the MXS the newest one that is available or the Sbach?

Can someone steer me to the motor packages or setups?

I do have several 2200 25c batts. that are waiting for a new home.

Thanks,

D

Greetings fliers

excerpt from a PM to GrizzlyM

Quote:
OK I dashed down to the park for a fly, 2 clicks of aileron not sure if I needed it as the wind had picked up and the MXS gets beaten about in the wind abit. flies like nothing else I've flown nice and stable on low rates and just wants to harrier at slow speed, had it stalled into the wind and it just stayed there, gave it some up and it went into hover, just my skills couldn't keep it there then OMG when the switch is flicked to high rates will snap roll with in its own length (whilst throwing the landing gear off), KE loops no probs seems to KE straight but again it was breezy so hard to tell. flats spins and almost KE spins (again skill issue). Can't wait for a calm day but at least on a breezy day 10+ knts you don't need the landing gear as it will harrier to stop on the ground
If you don't own one of these...THEN WHY NOT

well unless they're out of stock

Still grinnin
Craig

Where is the best place to buy the MXS V2 from? I am in the USA and would prefer a domestic retailer. Thanks!
