Scratch build Extra 300 by Steff

Hi everyone.

After about three months editing my ideas on the design and calculations I started drawing a plan for extra 300. My Extra will have 1210 mm wingspan and 1160 mm length and approximately 3000 cm2 wingarea.

I will keep you informed of progress of my build. I have to work on another project so be patient with me.

P.S. If anyone wonder, why I am not buying a model. I build because it is a challenge. And meanwhile the building I pick up a lot of knowledge. Buying the model is the Easiest thing.

Thank you very much,
Gasper

For now I can show you this:

Yes that it's right.
But for prototipe I will cut it on hands.

With plane is so far so good. I have finished elevator, rudder and wing. Now I'm working on fuselage.

When it will be finished I will post some images to see how it looks.

Have a nice day,
GasperStef

Hi

Glad to hear of your progress. How's about showing us some pictures

Have you thought about who you're going to get to do the laser cutting?

Regards

Any idea what the approximate AUW will be? Since you're talking about laser cutting parts I'm assuming this is a commercial product and you wouldn't be willing to share full sized plans.

Maximum should be around 1500g, but I am hoping that will be less.

With plan I will wait to see if everything will be ok. If all parts fit together and if the plane will fly good. Then I think that the plan will be available in jpg or pdf format.

Now I put the plan on the side because I have exams at the faculty.
But I will continue as quick as possible. I hope that this will be already in May.

I will take pictures of build and I will show it.

For now this is all.
Best regards,
GasperStef

The reason I asked is because it has been my experience that the laser cutters are not that keen to do one-offs. Took quite a while for me to find somebody willing to cut my last project.

Will be looking forward to your progress report.

I think the key is to find a retired guy that bought a CNC laser to keep himself occupied. I was looking for exactly such a guy and got a lead for him but I haven't followed up.

Turned out I found the guy I wanted to use in the US- Mr. Bob Holman of Bob Holman Plans fame. When the files are set up right he is very quick and the prices are reasonable too.

This is not a problem. I have one guy, who cuts parts for reasonable price. In fact too low price. But here in Slovenia is not a problem finding someone to cut your parts with laser because the laser is almost in every village.

O.k. back to plane. Here are some pictures of finished wing.

Nice, Nice looking ribs,

Larger gasket cutting houses use various formats to cutout all kinds of material. They might have some older CO2 x-y tables. Or even better, process your drawings. You would have to supply the balsa and could get the "work cell" operational w/ your specific project. CO2 & YAG Lser systems were the hot ticket for everything, but quickly became defunct as water jet systems & cutters came along for general processing of 2D shapes like gaskets.

Good luck w/ your fab job, I would love to have a laser-cut kit of my own. 30 watts CO2 on an X-Y table is all one needs.

Just my 2 cents,

Cheers, Doug

Hi

I hope the exams went well?!

Looking good- will be cheering from the sidelines!

What would your AUW budget be- about 45oz or so?

PS: Sounds like I need to move to Slovenia pronto and get my grubby little mitts on some of those laser cutters! Where I live in the Australian Outback the only thing we have in every town is a bar
