Seems if i plug gps gnd into left or right hand side of board the arduino starts to burn when you start it up

if i leave GND out it doesnt burn but then of course it doesnt work, as per the original problem lol

BTW im using an Arduino Pro mini so its not a nano as in the image
Can you make sure if the link between the Pro Mini 5v pin and UBEC/GPS is indeed gone?

I'm assuming you use the same lipo that powers the drone and you connect to the balance plug, right?

yeah im powering either using a lipo, or by the drones serial port

either the arduino starts burning when you boot up

link is deffo gone only thing in VCC is the receiver and the LLC

iv noticed its fine until the arduino finishes booting then the drones lights blink and it starts running the program, thats the point it starts to burn.

if you say, leave the rc controller switched off so it never boots it doesnt burn

odd that it burns when connected to the serial board GND isnt it? wouldnt thought that would place any load on the arduino

Just a thought, pins A0, and A1 are 5v live when the program kicks in

Do you think its sending that current round through the GPS then back into the GND thus creating a 5v extra circuit load on the board?

Do those pins need to be 5v? can they not be low voltage like the receiver pins, as its only sending data isnt it?

This would also explain why it doesnt work in SETUP because until you GND the GPS back to the board its not creating a circuit.

If we can use low voltage on those pins im certain it will be ok

Have you checked both VCCs (the one next to A3 and the one where FTDI connects)?

have you tried powering the whole Arduino from UBEC as suggested earlier (see http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...stcount=3155)?

After checking the above I'm running out of ideas and the last thing to try would be to go through photos of your setup to make sure we are not missing something.

I think you have a problem in your schematic.
The nano is powered by ubec (5v on VCC) and by drone (12v on raw).

cant be the 5v from the ubec is only going to the GPS

what do we think about this?

it makes sense to me, in setup test they are only running something like 0.5v

Iv just put those 330ohm resistor on both the TX and RX lines and its not burning as much now, and still works in setup, its still getting quite hot though so i think maybe even more resistance?

what would be a suitable resistor do we think to add more resistance?

Ok I think iv got it running at a satisfactory temp, at least for testing purposes.

And it all looks ok in SETUP, gets a proper GPS log etc

However next problem, when trying on the drone, it doesnt seem to be writing the log correctly and i dont get blinking arduino light when I press down on the throttle

here is a sample from the log P00.txt on the USB stick

I know lol but why. Surely a0 and a1 should not be outputting 5v when mod connected to Drone? When in setup test with ftdi they don't even output a volt. Why are they 5v lives when all they are doing is sending data?

They are the same with all my mods too. But only 5v when plugged into Drone. There must be a way of making them behave like they do in setup test

I've asked you to check/try a couple of things (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...postcount=3859). It is really hard to help you if you do not follow instructions...

Well iv not tried powering the whole lot from a ubec because it's not really an option if I have to do that I will have to forget gps as the people I have made for don't have ubecs

Iv checked the vccs

There wasn't anything else was there

Something, and I don't know if it's something in the miru code.? Is making a0 and a1 run at 5v live. They only become 5v at the point the program starts running and the Drone is ready to launch.

They are even 5v on ones iv made with nothing else attached

Are they meant to be 5v? I would have thought they should operate at similar thresholds to the receivers lines

Without UBEC you can forget about GPS working with proMini anyway.

Can get photos tomorrow.

The idea was to supply the gps/ubec as a package to people who wanted gps, to power the unit would require complete rewiring of there kits

Do you have any comments about a0 and a1 running at 5v if its meant to be like that then at least i can forget about it, but it seems strange to me and I'm sure it's what's causing my overheating problem and possibly why it won't get gps data in practical tests

Thanks for your help anyway so far buddy it is appreciated

A0 is TXo for GPS, the idle state is 5V. A1 is RXi for GPS, it is pulled up to 5V by the processor's internal pullup. If you don't use a GPS don't connect anything to these pins. If you ground anyone of them it could explain the heating up of your Arduino. Also, did you ever measure how much current your RX draws?
