Is this ESC to large?

I currently own (purchased used) an 80 amp Plush Turnigy installed in a HK GT 500 that's powered by a Typhoon 500 (1800KV) motor, the spec's on HK website states max-current of 55Amps, max voltage 22v, ESC 65 amps. My batteries are the 3000 6S and fully charged voltage is 25.2 volts.

The motor or speed controller is shuting down under load (was looping and of course inverted, was able to right it, but will have to buy a new set of landing gear). Initially, when I got the heli, I had to lower the head speed (to keep it from shutting down on liftoff), and dummy me decided to run about four batteries thru it before my bad attemp of auto rotation.

Does anyone have this setup, and what type of replacement ESC would you suggest? Thanks for your reply

i wouldnt say the ESC is too large...i dont beleive that you can have too big an ESC?

maybe go with a higher quality ESC like one made by castle creations...or even align. those are both very good qaulity...will be more expensive but probably worth it

also, the ESC might be too small, at my hobbyshop they will check the amount of amps that are being pulled to check that the ESC is okay...you might want to go to your hobbyshop and see if they can do that for you.

Hope this helps.

What size pinion are you running? The 1800kv typhoon motor needs a really small pinion to prevent you pulling insane headspeeds. Higher headspeed = higher amps = possible thermal shutdown of the esc. I have that same esc and use 3000mah 40c batts in my 500 clone but with a 1600kv motor and a 12t pinion and it has been faultless, doesn't even get warm.

This one?

As long as the mechanical set up and pinion are correct... The 80A plush should work fine, I think you have a programing error. What settings do you have for the ESC?

Tip,,, bad battery........Can't keep with amp's needed ... Old or cheap batteries are very good at cutting out on high amp's!

Frenche, heli has a 13T pinion, as one of the things I'll do, order a 12T.

Evan D., yes that's the one, a programming card is on order. Can one also program it with the instrucions and the transmitter stick?

Dan T. , I have three new batteries, and have tried em-all.

I thank you all for your reply.

13t pinion is most likely your problem, try to get an 11t as that will greatly improve things. Now you are probably pulling too many amps sending the esc into thermal shutdown. Even with a 12t pinion the 1800kv motor is still a bit high, you can try limiting your throttle curve to a maximum of about 80% but this is only a band-aid fix, best bet is an 11t pinion or a different motor.

Have you tried this calculator? http://dhrc.rchomepage.com/calc.htm I've found it very good for getting me in the ball park for motor/pinion choices.

I have that same exact motor and I found by using the data from my eagletree that this motor is closer to 1900kv and with a 13T pinion you could be hitting 3200 HS which could be pulling too much causing the shut down.

I have an 11T pinion from ready heli (11T revco pinion) and getting around 2600-2700 HS.

Set up is -
Typoon(1800kv) w/11T pinion
HK SS Heli Series ESC w/(ubec disabled)
2x 3S 2650 40C Zippy's in series
HK 425 CF mains

@ 22.51v, 28A, motor 38610rpm, HS @2622.96rpm
@ 21.58v, 37.59A,motor 36764rpm, HS 2497.55rpm

2622.96(HS) x 14.72gear ratio) =38609.97(motor rpm) / 22.51(volts) =
1715.23 / .9 = 1905.81kv

Voltage - Max 25.31, Min 21.5, Avg. 2.16
Amps - Max 38.08, Avg. 14.76
RPM - Max 54113.00, Av.24050.03
Hs - Max 3676.15

I run the same motor and esc with an 11t pinion with excellent results. I got a Revco pinion from readyheli.

Looks like the 12T had better lose a tooth, I'll go check if readyheli has any 11 T left, thanks ever so much for you all's input.....

I replaced my HK SS Series 70/80A ESC with a CC Ice 75 and tried the governor. After inputting my information I set the HS to 2700 but the esc said it was too high for proper governing, so I kept lowering the HS till it said it was good. This left me using a HS of 2250/2350 too low for my taste, but I decided to give it a try anyways.
Running 2250HS everything was cool, esc got a max temp of around 100f. 20 amps/avg, max around 30a.

Will try the 13T pinion tomorrow with the governor and HS of 2500 and 2700

Will post results when I get them.

Aloha,
Les

Received the 11T RevCo today from Ready Heli.com. As soon as my blades arrive, I'll get her up and see if it helped my ESC overheating probllem.

MolokaBoy, how did you get your amp readings on that helicopter with the blade spinning around? I have a watt-meter that I could read, but I'm not going to get anywhere near that blade even if I have the heli bolted to the picnic table.

Over on the Blade Sr site a month or so ago I read a post where a fellow just got a 450 size heli and wanted to run it up in his apt. He taped it to the rug and you know the rest of the story, he said it put a nice hole in his ceiling, said his wife was real mad at him, wonder if she has gotten over it, maybe he installed a ceiling fan....
