Even if it does fly, then it would pull people and skills out of the other forums which hurts and weakens everyone. We aren't the flyboys (nor do we have their numbers) who seem to need a separate board for each piece of the wing and fuselage.

If you want something, start an aggregator thread (like my Woodies thread) that serves as a central clearing house for Airboat info and start every Airboat related thread with the word "AIRBOATS:" in caps!!! With this you have a meeting place and you can find airboat related threads easily either via a visual or keyword search.
Where do we start the thread then? they aren't race boats, they arent scale, and dock talk isn't really a good place either

I'm brand new to the boating forum but I've been around electric planes for a few years, and I have to admit some disappointment that there isn't even a scratchbuild section for those of us who flat refuse to buy kits. Only when I was bored one day skipping from boring kit build log to exasperatingly boring kit build log did I stumble upon the springer thread, which quickly lead to building my first ever RC boat. If it had been in a scratchbuilt boats forum (which I looked around for in vain) I might have been interested years ago and hey maybe some of my hobby cash would have went to the tiny boat suppliers who depend on new customers and a growing market. The lack of a free plans thread means I now have to come up with my own designs, something I never bothered to do over in the populous foamy airplane forum. So to take a small step toward correcting this I will publish any plans I come up with in the hopes of planting another seed next to the great springer oak.

But to get back on topic, why not a separate place for airboats? to me they are not boats but sea planes sans wings. Interesting in their own right but separate from submerged props and wet rudders. And, if the 5 or so yahoos out there playing with ROV's (I plan to dip a toe at some point myself) get their own forum, why not the probable dozens of airboat fans? (pun intended!)

Now hey please I don't mean to start a discussion about whether or not airboats are real boats. This is just my opinion and it shan't be swayed.

Every legitimate nitch of our hobby deserves to be recognized, airboats are nothing new and these airboat guys are important too. Its pretty lame for the idea to be killed by people who don't have an interest in airboats, just to avoid clutter in the already anemic boating forum. With a pot so small with no chance for long roots or new branches is a great way to train bonsai but I don't think treating hobbyists like that is wise.

Perhaps thats the way some people would like to keep it, to dissuade new competitors from entering the market to protect their over-inflated kit prices and dissuade a scratch building culture. But as I said I'm new here.

Oh, and YES, this is a good idea.

As always, those with power and influence [or the Illusion (delusion?) of it] like to remind the rest of us that NO is more fun to say than YES, and that crap generally rolls downhill. so take a bite down there!

'Balkanisation', the nerve!

I'm curious, does each forum have its own financial sponsorship? is this a business decision or is it merely political? That sort of no might be more helpful than comparing hobbyists with wide and varying interests to small warring nations unwilling to unite under a single spit-shined boot.

More forums actually helps clean up the place. Still a bit sad that Woodies didn't get its own forum up at the top.

The experience of these boating forums has been the opposite. Specialization degrades both the overall forum participation and the specialized forums participation and traffic.

Please. If you cannot respond factually, you resort to personal attacks and vilification not of the position but the person? OK, but none of that contributes to the discussion other than, maybe, to convince people to vote down what people who do such things support.

Congrats, your contributions are under "ignore"

Oh, and as far as having illusions and delusions of power and influence... I know I am just one voice amongst many and really don't care for it to be otherwise. We are pretty much all dedicated to the hobby, very few of us are in this for 'the glory.'

In and of itself, this statement shows how much you are going to have to learn about boating and the sort of folks generally involved in the hobby. Most of us are motivated by what we feel will be the best thing for the hobby, or in this case, for the boating forums in general.

Personally, I think after seeing a couple of the pictures here and a couple of boats a number of years ago, the Scale area would be ok (the ones I have seen are at the very least good "stand-off scale" models), as would a sticky under Dock Talk, like the Springer sticky which, with over eight thousand five hundred and fifty individual posts and over eight hundred twenty seven THOUSAND four hundred (as of tonight) views, is one of the more successful threads on RCGroups and the most successful boat thread.

Having a 'sticky' at the top of Dock Talk works; probably better than if the springers would have had a specialized forum that hid them away from the everyday traffic that reads Dock Talk daily.

ZZ, I am really sorry you feel that way about the woodies forum but as much as I like Woodies, I voted a Woodie forum down for the reasons given; more specialized forums will hurt the overall quality of the boating section. After the a number of the people who backed the Woodies forum took their balls and fled to Yahoo, I started an aggregator thread for woodies in Scale Boats along the lines of the springer thread in Dock Talk. An Airboater aggregation thread along those lines would, I believe, serve the interests of the Airboaters better than a specialized forum would.

It's okay Craig, I voted against it too at the time. I regret that now seeing as how there is clearly a ton of support for classic wooden boats, how a lot of people who like them also contribute to other topics (such as yourself) and how frankly, i dont' like 'em at all. I feel like I helped screw a bunch of people and ended up screwing myself on that one, every time i click on "1943 CORVETTE" threads thinking Im gonna see a convoy escort.

As mentioned in the other thread, while I'm not a builder of Airboats I still feel that if there is enough interest in them and they want their own Forum, they should be allowed to have it.

I vote "Yes".

Hope you folks get what you want; Good Luck!
