The deed is done!!
The car event scheduled for last night was cancelled because of the tornado and flash flood watches so we went flying instead! The weather cleared and it turned out to be a beautiful night. Heidi and I walked over to the field, but I forgot that Thursdays is training night. The turnout was a bit light and I was ready to go to the other field, but the guys were interested to see what the XP-3 looks like in the air so they let me fly at the big field. Normally I like to do a madien flight without anyone around so I don't have any distractions and I can think, but C'est la vie.
I had one small issue with the prop nut coming loose before the first flight, but that was quickly fixed. The wind was almost 90deg to the runway so approaches would be interesting...
So, how did it fly? Great! The first thing is that it is nose heavy (yea!) so the initial rotation was a bit of a pull. I needed a bit of up trim to keep the nose level. Also, the ailerons are pretty ineffective. That isn't hard to believe with all that dihedral, but on the plus side the rudders are pretty good so I was able to get turned easily. The ailerons are nice to help coordinate the turns though. There were no scary bits in the flight at all and it was very stable and even did a bit of gliding. It does fly a little fast, but I expected with a weight around nine pounds.
For the second flight I removed a few ounces from the nose and that helped, but I think I can remove a bit more. It was more responsive and a little slower in flight. Once again, nothing scary - no adverse yaw, dutch roll, nothing like that. Oh, the steerable nose gear worked really well and I was able to taxi just fine. Neat!
So, all went well. I have some video from the two flights I need to edit, but here are some photos to start with.

Thanks guys for all your nice comments! It has been a really fun project and, as always, couldn't have done it without you.
I put together a video and uploaded it to youtube (my first actually). Here it is:
p.s. And I just noticed I misspelled the title.. Awesome! I'll fix that...
