Cool
Water cooled engine!

I've always been wondering if it's possible to watercool an airplane engine and look what I found:

Wondering when someone starts to convert his engine to a watercooled version

They have been running water cooled engines in model boats since way back in the beginning. Usually they have a special head with a water jacket inside, some have the fins machined off and a water jacket fitted, some have a extra water cooled backplate too.
They used to convert airplane engines in some cases with clamp on heat sinks that had a water passage through them.
Using a model boat, one has a water pickup tube starting just behind the propeller and they route the water line to the engine, and from the engine to dispose of the water outside of the boat.

Now it is a interesting thought about using a water or liquid cooled engine in a airplane.
I can see where it would be useful in tightly cowled airplanes, et cetera. You do add more weight, as you need a water jacket system to use liquid to cool the engine, plus a radiator and a water pump. You links to the really small water pumps does look nice, I wonder how much they cost. You'll likely want to use a anti-freeze mixture to prevent corrosion inside the engine's coolant system.

it could be pretty neat to have a cute little radiator in a model airplane that really works to cool the engine coolant.

Interesting. I had wondered about using a water jacket on my airplanes to preheat my smoke oil. I never could find a water jacket though.

Many years back there was an article in one of the model mags showing just that. If I wasn't so old I'd remember the article but I think it was a Stuka. There was a water-cooled two-stroke glow engine with a Perry pump for the coolant and radiator and all. Author claimed it worked well.

Dangerous ground, this. Someone will restart the arguement over aircooled and liquidcooled engines in service, just like the downwind turn arguement

There are some model boat engines that have a equivalent airplane air cooled engine. One could easily get the water cooled head to bolt onto the airplane engine and use a Perry Pump or something to move the water around. Maybe even a boat water cooled exhaust header too.

MVVS had a water cooled gas engine 68cc done, but apparently they never went into production: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_30.../anchor/tm.htm

here is a nicely done ZDZ engine conversion:

Here's a link I found in a car forum over at RCU for a 3.5cc liquid cooled engine. Although the engine seems to be very well made, I'm not so sure about the induction system which is really weird as can be seen in the exploded diagram at the bottom right corner.
