Chimera: 10" All balsa Delta, brushed 8.5mm motor, 30mm fan

Just a few pics of my latest project. Its still a work in progress but the maiden went well today so I had to post

After my MiG-15 with JS components I was looking for something with a bit more performance, so decided to try the 8.5mm Mustang motor. With the JS fan and Mustang motor I only measured a marginal increase of 12g thrust@1.1A so that wasn't the solution. I scouted around in my junk for something suitable and found a scrapped silverlit Gyrotor. Cut the 3-blade tail rotor down to 30mm and popped it on the Mustang motor. 18g@1.4A

I felt like building something "traditional" out of balsa for a change. I calculated by using 1mm balsa I would only be adding 1 or 2 grams max. I could also save 1g by glueing the motor straight into the airframe and leaving the plastic fan mount away.

I decided to do a tailless delta because then I could use the mixes of my DX6i It ended up as a sort of cross between a Fairey Delta 2 and Mirage III ( hence the name)

While building I realised the C of G is way too far forward but decided to give it a go anyway. Trimmed in loads of up and she flew great from the start The trim needs to be sorted, either weight backwards or wing forward or canards...

Specs:
Rx: AR6400
Motor: 8.5mm Mustang
Battery: 70mAh Hyperion
Fan: Gyrotor Tail 30mm
Span: 260mm
Weight: 22.8g
Thrust: 16g

Cheers

Got the trim sorted out with small wing extensions and canards. In the air it now reminds me of a Eurofighter...

Performance is definitely a lot better than my similiar sized Mig-15, speed at half-throttle is about the same as the Mig at full throttle. Ailerons are also a bit more fun than rudder The next upgrade might be to a slightly bigger lipo, the 70mAh cell is being pushed a bit@1,4A.
