Fly-Baby in 1:8 Scale

Well, after somehow winging up with a lifetime supply of L-4 cowls I figured it was a good time to come up with something to use them on, so I went to work on the Fly-Baby Biplane. I've always had a soft spot for that one, and figured it would be a terrific little model, and so it goes....

The model will be set up for 4 ch. R/C with an E-Flite 370 Outrunner. The full scale Fly-Baby only had a 22 foot span, so the model will be realatively small at 33", but has a ton of wing area. And, at theat size should build up nice and light, and with the 11 degree wing sweep should fly great. So lets get started....

Beginning with the Fuselage

The full scale Fly-Baby was little more then a large model, so figured it best to stay in the same vein of simplicity here as well. The frames are a simple stick frame with just one shaped part.

Prepairing to join the Frames

The landing gear mount beams were made up first by gouging a slot for the L. G. struts into the balsa mount beams. The cabane mounts were then built up and glued in place on the appropriate formers.

Prepping the Side Frames

The landing gear mound doublers were added next. Then the lower wing saddle and upper longerons were scored and cracked to make the distinct bends in the sides to angle into the tail post and firewall. And now, we're ready to join them up....

Joining the Frames

The rear L. G. Beam was pinned to the plan and the side frames glued in place on the beam. followed by the top formers in the cockpit area to tie it all together.

Joining the Front and Rear

From there, the tail post was pulled together and glued. Then it was forward to the firewall. Machinists Squares were used to keep thing nice and true and square....

Adding the Remaining Top Formers

Then with the nose and tail glued in place, the last of the top formers were added. Next up will be to remove the frame from the board and add the bottom cross pieces and the top stringers.

Sweet!
I just sold a 48" Fly Baby a few months ago.
It does have a ton of wing area. Flew like a low wing Cub.

If this one was a little bit larger I would be on it like white on rice.

Ditto for me too! a 1/6th or 1/5th scale Flybaby would be awesome. Unfortunately, its often windy where I live so little, lightly-loaded models don't fare very well here.

I live in what's been labeled as one of the windiest places in the world, Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. I fly my Tritle birds a lot, but usually at late evening or earlier morning before and after the winds get up. Nicest time to fly anway, less noise, less people and beeeeee-oooooooo-t-ful light. Pat will probably suck me in to buy this one like with his other birds.

Well, he won't have to "suck" me into it. It's already too late for me. I've got to get it in gear and get done with my current project, or it's gonna get shelved. Been waiting on this one!

sounds like another one to add to the inventory. I'm OK with the size.

Adding the Skin and Mounting the Servos

The top cover was added using file folder paper. Then once the actual location of the cockpit opening was established the servo mounts were added, the servos mounted, and the elevator pushrod run in.
