Hi Patron.

You did what I was thinking of doing to my Premier eagle RC kite
You changed the moter to the heavier Micro Dan 2510 3d -970 kv moter

I was concerned that the heavier moter would put extra strain on the
Premier vector power unit servos. Am I to assume that the stock servos
of the vector power unit handled the extra weight of the heavier moter?

Also when you switched to the more powerful Micro Dan moter did you
change to different size bullet connectors or did you match the moter
to the vector unit's speed control 2.0 MM bullet connectors?

Hi harrisdouma,

The stock servos worked just fine and I didn't change anything else because the new motor with the larger props actually draw less amps than the stock motor.

The only thing I am going to do is change the JST connectors to Deans because I still want to try some 2100 mAh batteries for longer flight times and I think the JST's are just a little too small.

I made a pigtail with JST on one end and male deans connector on the other. I stuck the JST connector and about 3"of wire through to the top of the Eagle leaving about 4" with the deans connector on the inside of the Eagle. I tied a couple of small black zip ties on the top side of the pigtail leaving 1/2" zip tie "fingers" sticking out, this keeps the pigtail from being pulled back through the slit in the fabric. Leaving this pigtail in the Eagle saves time. Just plug in the power unit in the top side and plug in your battery inside the Eagle. No more trying to find the slit and thread the wire through each time you put the Eagle together.

With the cost of living these days, anyone on a low fixed income looking at any nonessential items are a luxury they can't afford. How is this any different?

UPDATE - MicroDan motor

9x4.7 APC-SF Prop - this is the largest prop diameter you can run without the prop rubbing on the body when the Eagle is in flight with and the body is inflated.

IMHO, the MD motor with the APC 9x4.7 prop is a big improvement over the stock setup.

My conclusion is that even though the MD motor and 9x4.7 prop gives more thrust, this kite is best flown in light winds. It's much more fun to fly in light wind conditions.

Hi All
My eagle flys great yet! I was thinking of cutting off the 2 legs. since they just
seem to dangle out there. I think it might give the eagle less drag, less weight,
and maybe make it more aerodynamic? Any thoughts on this??

You'll see no difference without the legs. The airframe has tons of drag and the legs gone will do nothing you can tell, to help. If you don't like the way it looks with the legs hanging out, that's another matter. Poor legless bird!

After 2 + years I finally ordered one. I hope to make my own power unit. does anyone have close up photos of the ready made unit that I could use to work off of??

When I bought the smaller thust vectoring eagle I also purchased the
gimble and frame for $48 added my own electronics and was ready to fly.
to see large photo of gimble and frame go to www.premierrc.com
than click on buy online and than go to parts section where you will see gimbles
and other parts of the power unit. hope this helpful?

Thanks for the link. I was able to see the parts. The gimble and frame is about $56. I'll have the Eagle tomorrow and can then evaluate if I can make my own or not. Maybe you can tell me where the cg is and how far out from the mounting rods the the motor sits.

I modified my eagle long ago I fly with 3 cell thunderpower 2100 batteries
I put in micro dan 2510 970kv moter for more power, I use 10X6 GWS prop. and
flattened out top of body so prop does not hit it. I can not tell you where the stock moter
should sit. I threw away the stock moter because I found it to be a bit underpowered
to my way of thinking (micro dan moter is heavier)
Center of cravity can be found through trial and error. generally between the
back of the front Velcro strip and the front of the rear Velcro strip You will know when
you have center of gravity right
Patron mentions on page 3 of this thread where he put the size battery he used for balance

Ok Very good. I got my Eagle kite today from Horizon in good shape. The triangle motor support sets the width of the frame at about 2 3/8" on centers and with the photos on Premiers site of the frame (being pretty square on) I was able to scale up the picture and get some accurate sizes.
I have the frame and gimble about 50% there. I hope to have it done by tomorrow.

I got to maiden the Eagle yesterday. It flew without incident. I first flew it on a 1300mah pack for 4 minutes and depleted the pack by 50%. On the second flight I tried a 2200mah but noticed it was difficult to gain much altitude. I am guessing the weight of the battery is too much. It was blowing about 8-10 mph and made flying a bit more difficult. I think it also hampers the eagles ability to gain a lot of height, at least wind does with my ornithopter.
The vector thrust unit is homebuilt and costs under $50 for materials.
So far I am liking it alot.
