F3B World Championships

The F3B soaring championships of the world will be held the next several
days in Kirchheim Germany. Some of the best pilots in the world will compete
in a three task (speed, duration, and distance) soaring event. The USA team
composed of Daryl Perkins, Mike Lachowski, Gavin Botha, and Daryl Zambalos
has done very well in the first day of competition and currently leads both
as a team and as the highest rated individual pilot. You can check on the
latest news from the contest by visiting the following web link:

Re: F3B World Championships

I read that two members of the US team had a newly designed plane that has
been tearing up the F3B competitions here in the states. Are they flying
the new design, or have they opted for a more time-tested model?

I had heard that the new design set an unofficial world record for the speed
event- unofficial oinly because the F3B registration sticker was delayed in
the mail and was not on the plane's wing during the flight. If they are
using this design, I'm sure the team will gain ground in the speed runs.

Best of luck to the team!!

Re: F3B World Championships

Gavin Botha and Daryl Zambalos are flying an original design called the SP1.
SP1 was designed by Gavin and has proven to have exceptional launch height
off of the winch. The new airfoil which Gavin designed for the airplane also
is capable of providing great speed. Gavin recently flew what could have
been a new speed record if he had an international FAI competition stamp at
the time of the F3B contest at which the record speed run was flown. Daryl
Zambalos, Gavin's team mate, is also flying the SP1 at the world
championship. Daryl is an exceptional pilot and is able to judge conditions
(reads air) with the best around.

F3B is not flown as often in the USA as it is in parts of Europe.

I think we are lucky in the USA to be represented by such a fine team of
sportsmen.

A picture of the SP1 can be viewed at

Re: F3B World Championships

I looked at the USA individual results after four rounds and
the placings were:

9 Lachowski, Michael
17 Zaballos, Darrel
25 Botha, Gavin
51 Perkins, Daryl

So it doesn't look good for Perkins, he has had two bad rounds.
I don't know how many bad rounds can be thrown away, but it
looks like he's going to have a hard time defending his title.
