We have many friends down there in New Zealand. I sincerely hope everyone is ok. Lets help any way we can.

Just saw this on the news, and thought I would delurk long enough to wish our friends in NZ safety and health.

Having been thought one of these I can tell you the scary part is over. The rest is pretty easy, just a lot of work.

Except for the aftershocks
BTW Christchurch was hit with a 6.5 "aftershock" from the quake in September.
Buildings down, Australia has sent rescue/recovery team to help.

Just got off the phone from the sister-in-law, who lives in Christchurch.

Lots of damage, most of the centre of Christchurch (a pretty city) is rubble and off course there have been 65 deaths (so far). They are aware of numbers of people still trapped in buildings etc.

She's very shaken (hmmm... I guess all of Christchurch was.. ) but is OK.

As mentioned, a 6.5 earthquake but a shallow one, and very close - hence the damage. They've pretty much had continuous aftershocks (up to around 4) from the big one last Sept, so it's getting rather wearing on the nerves!

Your thoughts appreciated for the people in NZ!

Terrible news. I pray for the casualties and hope that all are well.

NZ is a beautiful area of the globe, but dangerous. The island is a small piece of continent broken off from Australia/Antarctica and is now at a spot where the Pacific Ocean floor from Chile to NZ is being drawn under another part of the crust that supports Australia/Asia. In a manner of thinking, California on Steroids.

Doubt there will be much from them given power is out through most of the city along with problems with most communication in and out.

And with nice mountains, coasts, good social setup and behaviour (public transport is brill), no guns, and generally clean an tidy!

Only thing is they have a problem with 'iiis' and 'eees' - so expect to buy a dozen 'iggs', and 'six' isn't allowed if you are under age..!

Beautiful scenery. But overrrun with Hobbits and Orcs...

JOOC, what is the pronunciation of "Christchurch"-- long "i" or short "i"? I found the Maori "Ōtautahi" but not the "English".

I was on the phone with my wife and daughter on the North Island at the time the quake occurred. My niece and her family live very near the epicenter of the quake, and she had taken her son to the hospital in Christchurch when it happened. The hospital was damaged but remained operational throughout. Happily, she and the kids were safe, but it did take several hours to get into contact with them, due to communication outages.
