New Vapor floats and skis
I designed a new set of floats that also function as snow skis for my Night Vapor. My first design worked well but the Vapor would only lift of the water with a little speed from a touch and go. My new design is made out of 1/2 mm Depron that I purchased a few years ago from Kenway Micro Flight. http://kenwaymicroflight.com/ (Unfortunately, the 1/2 mm Depron is no longer available, but the 1mm Depron that they sell should also work well.) I first flew them off the water at the 2010 JR Indoor Electric Festival. The model will now lift off the water in only a few feet!
I also tested them in the snow. The model also has a very short ground roll in the snow. Not as much fun as flying off the water but still cool.
I had more fun flying my cousin's Piper Cub off skis this winter. The plane is so easy to land with the skis. Just set the landing attitude and let her slide in, very smooth. The Cub has no brakes with the skis installed but they are not needed as once the tail touches down the plane slows very quickly. We shot the video and photos on Wednesday as we still had lots of snow on our field in PA.

Thanks for the plans Joe. I had fun flying your Vapor off Spektrum Lake. Time to build some for Carolynn's plane.

Is the Depron pattern, cut and then glued of folded then gluded?
For the Ultra Micro design, what else would work? Heat formed soda straws, hot-wire cut open-cell foam, food package plastic film heat formed (Fast-food burger boxes) .... ???
Thank you. - Owlpic
