Re "Planes of Fame" backlot.

A2D Skyshark turboprop contra prop development of the AD (A-1).

Incidently the AD had a SIOP role as a nuclear bomber in the late fifties and early sixties. In theory it would launch a weapon powered by an 8" Tiny Tim rocket in a toss maneuver. In theory it would give about 8 miles of separation between the weapon and plane at the time of detonation. Couldn't fathom driving a 190 kt airplane on such a mission.

I think this was a Tri-Star with a RR engine on the right side and British Airways paint on the right side of the fuselage. P&w engine and Pan Am??? on the left. Am I close?

I'm sticking to a doctored pic theory.
The fuse is longer on the right and the tail is not symetrical plus there is a line right through the point of symetry?

A few P-59s were later modified and used as drone directors or manned target aircraft aircraft with a second cockpit installed forward of the main cockpit.

America's first XP-59A, AAF serial number 42-108784, is preserved at the National Air and Space Museum. Shortly the jet's first flight, the Army recognized the need to have an observer on board to record flight test data. They converted the gun bays forward of the pilot to accommodate the observer, cutting a 20-inch hole in the upper skin and mounting a seat, small windscreen, and instrument panel in this rather cramped, open cavity! Flight tests resumed on October 30, 1942, and for the remainder of its AAF career, the aircraft flew in that configuration.

Ryan FR-1 Fireball. Saw one fly once an NAS Anacostia. Couldn't get the jet to operate however.

These are FJ-2 Furies or early model FJ-3s. Most of the FJ-3s had small wing fences.

Getting back to the P-59.

This is the original XP-59 with the observer's seat and windscreen in front of the regular cockpit. Had to get a little chilly up there.

If they were using the english system they should have been called Sea Sabres.

Have you heard and Avon turbines spool up? Our Canberra's had then as well as our Sabres. Music to the ears.
