Just wanted to post this because it was the first plane I ever saw on floats (B-I-G ones) up close and personal.Always loved it. Not much of a mystery, what with Google available to all but it would make a nice float scale ship and I seem to recall someone built one about 50 inch WS.

Just got back from a week's business in South Korea. Guess I missed a lot of action.

OK - up a notch again.

What was the only aircraft to use this brute of an engine ?

I'm reachin' here, but is that the Allison V-3420 used in the Fisher P-75.

If it isn't, I always wanted to see a pic of two V-1710 s paired up.

He-177 had paired D-B 603s...
With a soldier in the background that kinda dates the image from WWII and Yurp..
R, I had some photos of the XP-58 and the V-3420 in my desk at work... During the engineer's strike at Lockheed in 1980, one of the scabs removed them...

Hmmmmm, probably a good call Sparky. I had second thoughts on mine 'cause I seem to remember two drive shafts (which I suppose were "joined" in a contra gearbox in the case of the Fisher P-75)

Actually I would have recognized the dual 603 pic if they displayed it on fire.

Scabs at Lockheed? Musta' been ex Boing types.

Well done Sparky !! Yes, it's an engine from an He 177.

I shot the photo 2 weeks ago at the Sinsheim Transport Museum.
I have 3 books on the He 177 and the only named remaining artifact from an He 177 is the stored engine at Silver Hill. Guess all the books are wrong.

The J4 was the Biplane and the other I was on the trail of due to the Jumo engines will have it soon. I have seen it in a book somewhere as a pressurised aircaft.

Got it the Junkers EF51

In December 1935 the RLM asked Junkers Flugzeugwerke for the developement of a high altitude bomber aircraft. The developement of this aircraft was started by Herbert Wagner, who had joint Junkers Flugzeugwerke in September 1935 and who became member of the executive board in 1936. Junkers Flugzeugwerke had already gained experiences with high altitude aircraft during the developement of the Junkers Ju49 of 1932. Nevertheless the EF61, as Wagner's design was designated, was a complete new approach.
