Micro Vectored Thrust Kite

Howdy,

There seems to be a lot of interest lately about vectored thrust kites in this forum. However, few to none of them are actually indoor/micro models.. So I decided it was time to build a micro VT kite..

S.F. Cody built kites before he started making airplanes. His kites date from the late 1800's. I built a small one to fly indoors. It flew fine as a kite, but couldn't stand up to even small breezes outdoors. So it sat on the shelf...

But, using some carbon fiber tubes, I built a u-joint, hooked that to a PZ Cessna RX, and with some other parts, Voila! A Vectored Thrust Cody Kite...

With a 90 mAh LiPo the total weight is 13.1 grams. The wing span is a bit over 41 cm. So I think it fits into indoor/micro..

Here are some pics.

Test flights will be done this weekend at the Uni-Dome meet in Cedar Falls Iowa.

As always, any questions or comments??

Thanks for the encouragement, all.

I don't know about doing a video of the first flight, Bill. As you know they can end in disaster. But, then, catastrophe can be amusing...

lol, true enough though...maiden when they have a decent chance (of being filmed).

What an exquisite offering that is Del !
The vectoring looks to be sensible and easy to get to for any alterations.

I'm certainly not trying to throw cold water on your project, but it looks to me that there may be some major interference between your pitch and yaw controls - e.g., one may affect the other.

Have you "dry" flown the controls to check for this?

There is now a discussion group for RC kites. Check out Aircraft - Exotic and Special interest - RC kites. You might want to move your thread.

Yep, Jim, you're right. That should make the first flight even more "interesting"...

The reason I did it this way was was to make it as light as I could.

I'll find out soon....

Well, folks,

I tried to fly it today. All I got was a powered descent. And an un-controlled one at that... Less than spectacular in either failure or flight...

But it didn't crash and tear itself to bits. So now I go back to work on it.

It needs more thrust and more throw on the u-joint.

Bill (aka RCBilly) shot some video. It's up to him whether or not to post it.......
