Help!
Complete shop list to buy from HK to start heavy Multirotor from zero ?

Hello all !

Welll, I am almost ready to place my order to HK and need a little help please !

The goal is to build a training quad for a complete novice so I need not only the flying parts but also all the rest, and want to do it in a single HK order for the sake of cost and simplicity (I live in Japan so multiple ordering is as bad as all-technical-japanese-only local shops).
Controller will be either MK or UAVX, may be a kk for the training quad. I will try to build the frame myself due to probable multiple crashes anyway.

Please help me by confirming those are correct choices (not the best but good at low prices) and that I am not forgetting anything important !

1/ Engines
NTM Series 35-36A 910Kv / 350W
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=14847
I choose those because kapteinkuk has made a fantastic heavy lift hexa with them :
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1372744

2/ Props and props savers
kapteinkuk has used APC 12x3.8 but I cannot find them in HK store, can anyone recommend something correct ?
please also recommend some prop savers please !

3/ ESC
kapteinkuk as used Plush 25A and they stood the very heavy lift without problem. I am wondering if I should take the 25A or just oversize in 60A, so if when I upgrade to coto I am ready for any engine. What do you think ?
Programming card is here, will buy one :
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=2169

4/ Tx/Rx
Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter w/ Module & 8ch Receiver (Mode 2) (v2 Firmware)
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=8992
Looks good, I am thinking of buying one additional receiver in case of crash, should I ?
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=12339
To power the transmitter, I am taking that battery based on a review recommendation :
ZIPPY Flightmax 2500mAh Transmitter Pack (Futaba/JR)
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=6955

5/ Batteries
This is where it gets very complicated for me ! I have zero understanding of what is a good choice for an octo, so I am lost
kapteinkuk uses 4 of those : Turnigy nano-tech 2200mah 3S 25~50C Lipo Pack
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=11911
Maybe 2 batteries for an octo will be better ? In that case what should I take ? (Flight time not an issue for me, weight not so much an issue)
I also understand I need lipo alarm, this kind of stuff :
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=7223
Can anyone recommend a better choice ?

6/ Batteries charge and balance
Completly lost here. After a quick review, that looks good (a bit better than the Turnigly one maybe) :
HobbyKing Quattro 4x6S Lithium Polymer Multi Charger
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=10327
I also understand I need more cables but this will depend on the battery choosed.

7/ Frame and goodies
Will buy some tubes and tools to shape them ... got any idea ?
What else am I forgetting ? Some glue and screws I guess ?

What do you think ? Anything else I need ? And yes I will buy at least 6 engines and 5 ESC in order to have spares for quality issues ...
Thanks a lot for taking the time to read this in any case

Tips:

Frame: Build a large frame, the longer the arms, the longer it takes for the quad to change direction, this will make flight more stable, you give up a little of 3d flight for stability.

Make sure you know how to solder things...

thank you so much Vokus ! this will help a lot indeed !

I have a few questions
- the Gold Connectors and Heat Shrink Tube will allow me to do the power wiring battery<>esc<>engines, correct ?
- the Servo Lead Extention will allow me do do the other wiring, correct ?
- most people use very long props, 9x3 is really what I need ?

For the engine, I have read in jesolin Mega thread that engines below 1000kv are better for vibration, so I will stick with the 910 kV ones I think. For the Tx I will stik to the 9Ch, it will give me margin to add a camera mount later. Sorry I was not clear about this !

As per controller, I have seen that kk will cost about 100usd, maybe I will go directly for a UAVX instead, with a lot of protection. For ESC I will go with the Plush since they are recommended in Jesolin thread - I still do not know if I need to oversize or not.

Thanks again !

I'd be careful with vokus recommendations - it doesn't stack up. He suggests a motor that has almost twice as much power that the KK heavy lifter together with these crappy and much too small tri-blade GWS props. Also, the bullet connectors are prone to give bad connections occassionaly (I know - I have them on my hexa - lots of other people report the same issue). If your objective is to lift a heavy camera either solder your motor leads to the ESC or use appropriately sized screw terminals (google the German word "Luesterklemme" - I'm not sure what the proper term in English is.)
Also stick with the turnigy 9x (as you indicate) - it is the best value for money and at $60 it doesn't make sense to go for the even cheaper option.

For the motor/prop power combination - why not stick to the setup KK suggested in his thread - they obviously do the the job. Hobbyking doesn't stock APC props you have to buy them elsewher - you can buy directly from APC AFAIK.

thank you OpticalFlow !

for props I have no problem to stick wit kapteinkuk recommendation if there is nothing good in HK store

for connector,s I am completely lost, I think I just need some wires strong enough for the A the engine will give and some connectors to make unplugging easier along with a foldable frame ? can anyone give me a couple of links on HK that will do that ? If not I will try the local japanese stores

get DT700 motors and run them with gws DD 11/7 props to start with add to that hobbyking ss 15/18amp esc's + 3000mah 3s 20c lipo (no lower but a lot bigger is fine)

you should get all the lift you want if not chsange prop to gws 12/6?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkBkWiPe7ik

not a hex but if you look at the 1290g tri running on 10/7 props you canestimate what 11/7 or 12/6 will do

the quad is 1.5kg with same 10/7 props dt700s and ss 15/18esc's

ok let me explain

in easy speak the motors Kaptain used are great but he uses 6 lipos and flys for 6mins at 4kg pulling 18.64A per motor?

thats 1 minute per lipo

motors i suggest will produce 900+ grams of thrust each at 13amps and 4 of them fly a 1.5kg quad on one 2600 3s lipo for 10mins

use 2 lipos instead of 6 save money
use 6 dt700 motors with above lipos and you should get around 15mins+ flytime instead of 6 at 4kg

thats 7 minutes per lipo

but you know what your doing

now the kicker

if you now run 6 lipos one for each motor funny things start to happen

read this comment on the site
"Excellent motor for a Slowstick on 2 cells with an 11x4.7. Almost 20 minutes with 1500 mah 2s pack. Comes down ice cold. Quiet bearings on mine."

so he gets 20mins on 2s with 11/47 prop for one motor times that setup by 6 then divide by weight of hex (possible 40min run time with these? maybe?) on 6 2s 1500 lipos

are you really sure you want to fly for 6mins then have to go home to charge 6 lipos?

or have to carry 18 lipos to the field for 3 6 MINUTE FLIGHTS?

charging each lipo can take over an hour for each 2200 pack if you fly till the lipo alarm goes off?

18 lipos with your motor choice = 30mins very max fly time? and at very least 18 hours to recharge?

now grab a calculator and sit back and work out how much longer you will fly on 2 of the lipos i picked with 6 dt700s running 2 lipos in parallel

then how long it will take to charge 6 2600 lipos (around 90mins each? at good old 1c lipo lasts much longer over time)

then how much it will cost for 6 of your motors vs 6 of mine

then how much 6 of your lipos will cost compared to 6 of mine

then how much time you will spend charging up your 6 lipos vs your flight time and compare that to my 2 lipo vs flight vs time charging

i may not know much but by my way of thinking? it will take almost 24 hours at 1c to charge 18 2200 and for that you will get to fly for 20 to 35mins?

or it will take almost 7 hours at 1c to charge 4 2600 and for that you will get to fly for 30 to 45mins??

err, you just get me a bit more confused

I plan to use 2x Turnigy 5000mAh 3S 25C Lipo Pack and 4x NTM Series 35-36A 910Kv / 350W, so far I understand it is a good set up.
I can always buy a few stronger batteries when I go octo.

I am not concerned so much about flyght time, 10 minutes with a 2kg net payload is already good, this is for still photography only. Got to the point, take off, shoot, land, find the next point and walk there and repeat

H-king ESC's suck for quads. I purchased the 10 Amp esc's and couldint get my quad to do anything but crash. I was using the kk blue board at the time, i switched the esc's out for the mystery 12 amps and didint have a single problem. Id advise you pick a diffrent esc (if theyre similar to the h-king 10s)

thank you for your advice, I will stick with Plush ESC as recommended in Jesolin Megathread. The question is only if I go 25A since kapteinkuk has proved it is enough, ot if I oversize to 60A for safety. I do not mind the cost difference so much.

This thread is very similar to where I was a few months ago. I'm still in the process of picking up the parts. Canada Post is on strike so it puts a curb on receiving anything at the current time.

I plan on two 3s 5000mah packs for my hex.

Take a look at my thread regarding my build.
