Flyin' low & slow T-28s!

My maiden flight was actually performed by a professional pilot who was at the airfield with a very quick prop jet.
When he got it at about 200 feet, he handed the tx to me and I had a blast. But then he brought it in for the landing.
On the ground, one of the wing stabs had become unglued, so that was it for the day. (The enclosed glue takes forever to dry!) I reglued them all with epoxy.

Next flight was also a gas! I flew at an undeveloped subdivision, using the road as a runway. When I came in to land, I thought I'd try to soften it with the flaps. When I dropped the flaps, the 182 rose up about 8 feet.
This freaked me out, so I kind of let go of the controls....and watched it splash into the nearby pond.
Uhhh....yeah, at least the water was warm. That was my first swim of 2011.

One the very next day, flight #3, I few for a good 7-8 minutes, thought I'd swap batteries out and as I swung around, I misjudged and hit a cable TV line. The plane flat spun, but unbelievably, it recovered, but I stalle dit and it came down from about 12 feet: nose first.

Like GJOsik, I bent the prop adaptor. He and I have worked together, swapping ideas to fabricate our own. It's not perfect, but it fits and it works.

If anyone is getting as PO'd about Nitroplanes not expediting this part in for so many of us, as I am, PM me and I'd be happy to make the piece for you and mail it.

I have a photo of it:

I have yet to maiden the new part due to daily winds of 8-15MPH, but it;ll come soon!

In the meantime, I had been waiting for the Blue Version 4 of this Sky Trainer but got impatient and bought the in-stock red one. I just didn't like it, so as GJOsik and I waited on parts from NP, I decided to "fix" mine. Here it is in beautiful "Forest Green" :

Gotta pull those LED lenses and get the red outa there!

Nice work! I like the green!

Sorry about the crashes. Just take what you can from them and learn not to do it again. =)

Nice work. The green looks really good. I've bent my adapter also. A little run-in with a tree. Fortunately NP was quick about sending me a new one.

About the flaps... Never deploy flaps on final. You'll always balloon up and screw up your approach. deploy your flaps on the downwind leg. That way you can get yourself on speed before you set up your glide slope on final.

Have fun!

Thanks for the tip, Prowler!

Guys, I noticed a BUNCH of new Airfield models arrived at Nitroplanes this week, yet they didn't get ANY PARTS WHATSOEVER for our planes.

I feel very duped and cheated by Nitro-P. What are we supposed to do? I am at a complete loss and amazed that a company would do business this way.

I need a motor mount. I straightened mine, but I don't trust the angle I set it at. The firewall was bent, so it was a tough call....
And the prop adaptor is an issue with many of us!

Now NP is selling more & more of these Sky Trainers and these new folks will inevitably crash and need parts too. This is absolutely insane.

Sky Trainer

I guess every owner/flyer here has covered every aspect of this great (and cheap) trainer.
Mine flew well..others told me! I watched carefully but didn't dare fly.
Then, an expert flyer friend had a rare lapse, giving it UP elevator inverted, with predictable results. Big mess, very little plane.
Now, with a new fuselage, cowl, rudder, modified and strengthened nose wheel assembly and epoxied-the-heck-out-of landing gear, + a 3 blade prop, she tears up the sky.
I know. I soloed with her..4 times so far. Two rather pathetic but successful (nothing broke!) landings, I am on my way!!

I used assorted sized and angled soft-bristle brushes from the local crafts store and "Apple Barrel Gloss" acrylic hobby paint. (Only $1.29 per bottle.)
I bought "True Green" then added drops of Gloss Black until it was a Forest Green.
It looked very thick & heavy when I finished - it took 3 coats to kill the stock red - but as it cured, it gave-up its "bulkiness" and now it looks tight and lighter.
I 'spose it slowly lets the moisture evap out and creates a tough, but nicely-flexible coating.

I am VERY HAPPY with the way it looks now.

WHOA! Put Your Sky Trainer on the Water: FLOATS!

The Sky Trainer is manufactured by FMS, but Nitroplanes (Motto: "Planes, Not Parts!") isn't the only distributor.

"Ready2Go" of Germany has the Sky Trainer 182 by FMS, and it is sweet!

But the cool part is that they actually sell a FLOATS kit for the 55" Cessna!

Here they are:

It looks awesome!

Airfield won't stock these because they'd fall under the "Parts" category. So they'd have to be marked "Out of Stock" immediately.
HA HA!
If you think you are ready for floats, here's the link. I don't see any reason why the Germans wouldn't ship to the USA or Canada.

Does it say FMS somewhere? That plane is larger than the AF 182...and with larger components, a 4S pack 60 amp esc and 14 inch prop.

This is such a fun little plane to fly.

We got our first flights of the season in today. I took the Sky Trainer out to get the rust off of my thumbs. My 15yo son came with me. He's been showing a lot of interest in flying, and I've had him flying on the simulator. So, on the second flight today I handed the controls over to him. Wow! He did really great! He got himself into a couple hairy situations. But, he knew exactly how to correct it. I swear he's a natural I'm a proud Dad

I have the first edition of this aircraft. Over winter, I discovered the aileron servos could move in their boxes, causing the ailerons to move around, fixed that. I had replaced the foam hinges with pinned ones, which left a small gap and allowed the ailerons to flex; fixed that with some covering in the hinge gap, and a bit of CF strip on the trailing edges. Just flew it today, first time after fixes. Way better behaved model now. Even with the 'big' 2650mah battery, it is well behaved in cross winds, and even dead-sticks better (oops!).

Mine is arriving this week as well. Landing gear scaring me a bit from what I have read. i mostly have grass to land on. Anyone know of any simple replacement wheels i can buy to swap out that will fit?

Something like the Apprentice 15e, or SuperCub form HobbyZone or something that fits it?

Or am I being too nervous? i fly mostly Super Mini Cub right now. I can take off/land no problem...
