long range uav?

I am looking to make a uav with a 450 mile range that operates within AC 91-57. I would like to be able to carry a payload of around 5 pounds total. My questions are:

1. What would be the best powerplant- gas or electric
2. what would be the best airframe design?
3. Is there a radio system that could reach 1/2 that distance?
4. How big?

What Gary is saying is that statement alone takes you out of AC 91-57 parameters.

Assume cruise of around 50 mph, (so your friend driving the rag-top with the top open can keep up with the plane while you fly it for about nine hours.(not exceeding 400 feet of course.) So thats nine hours worth of fuel, and several containers for attending to certain personal functions en route, and of course a stack of burgers, sandwiches , cans of coke...........This project will take a lot of planning!

I think the easiest route would be to repeat what has worked in the past. Look at this article for more information

as far as a radio that reaches 200+ miles I do not know of any

Some while back they were driving a buggy on the Moon by radio control from Earth. Long range equals long bucks!

I would use a VW bug engine running liquid hydrogen, on a sailplane.

HEY, IT MIGHT WORK.

I think this is not as crazy as people are making it out here..
Not sure about flight duration, a good electric glider would do it. There are systems available in today's RC markets that you program your flight path in the software using google earth, could be as long as ya like, then launch your uav, and turn off the ground rc to let the uav complete it's flight path autonomously!
Either that or ask to borrow a military uav from your local military leaders lol

Too dangerous. It's first flight could get us shut down for good.

You can program terrain avoidance, but how about buildings, cell phone towers, helicopters, other R/Cers, small airport approaches, private aircraft and your own planning errors?

if only 20 miles are needed, why ask for a platform capable of 450 miles in your first post?

20 miles are achievable by almost any rc plane out there.

i heard something like that, but all i saw was a hazy pic of the landing lights. Any links?

also, i'm not sure if that counts as "out to sea". what i was planning was a flight up the saginaw bay into lake huron, and head north.. Plan was to make a flying wing aircraft with a .60 size motor as a pusher, and to hold something in the range of 1-3 gallons of fuel. Control would be passed by a small onboard computer with a 3g card for route modification en route and a live camera feed for diagnostics/view. Wingspan would obviously be large, possibly in the range of 12 feet. But at this point, i'm just looking into an idea. and legalities.
