I here ya Tipsy. I'm from Melbourne and have similar issues with cost. Have found buying online from the the US or Japan is much cheaper. The only issue is stuff like rx's as the frequency is different. I buy from aircraft-world.com now as they're cheap and International shipping is only 2.50. Looking at some of the stuff you listed, you could have got them for almost half price online. aeromicro.com is also good (about $US6.00 shipping)

I agree with your comments regarding saving money by purchasing overseas. I have learned a lot over the last 18 months and the internet is the way to go for most purchases.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I would do things very differently if I started all over again. I would crash less too!

I've taken up full-scale soaring. I will be able to buy a very nice glider for less than I've spent on this hobby! - and I've only been into R/C for 3 years!!

Guys,

You know that the costs here are not because of the state of the economy or the A$. It is the greedy larger hobby importers, who are getting stuff for the same price as the US distributors, but are unwilling to pass on savings to the end user. Do you really think that brushless motors and esc's really should cost almost double what they cost in the US or Japan? They are getting them landed for the same wholesale price, plus about 10% for shipping, so why aren't we paying 10% more? Because they are lining their pockets!!

I am in the final stages of having E-tec Li-Po's arrive for distribution in Australia, so I know first hand what margins they are making. I am able to provide these at the same cost as the US & Japan, plus about 10%. Add to that, that I ship for free for orders over $100, and the price is the same.

These big wholesalers wont sell to me, because I will pass on savings to the end user, and I might make things available to people at a reasonable price!! This, and the fact that I am only an E-based vendor.

My aim is to provide any products I can get hold of, at prices comparable to the prices available overseas. And this has been successfull so far. If only I could get mega motors!!!

EDIT> I should add, that if the big guys here keep this up, there will be no LHS's, as everyone will be buying from the net. Then they will have no choice but to sell to me!

Cheers,

Andrew Zaf.

Hey Zaf

I hope you start bringing in some Brusless motors and controllers, you will get my business, another one that bugs me is the price of servo's. I have to pay $40+ for a micro servos and the people in the states can pick them up for under $10US

Tipsy,

I wish I could, but most of the big brands of radio gear are already brought in by one of the big three importers here. THese guys charge the hobby shops more for these wholesale, than you and I can buy form the US retail. So it gives the retail vendors here no choice but to be expensive.
About the best deal you will get in OZ is H-store in Sydney. And these nearly didn't make it either, as they were refused at first, as their retail shop was not "big enough" and they were pushing their business more towards the "net". The importers here are very worried about the growth of internet vendors, and so they should be. They will soon feel the wrath of you consumers going overseas..............unless they play the game fair.

Cheers,

Andrew Zaf.

Hey Zaf...whats' your website. I would prefer to buy Australian if I could...even if it's a "little"more. But paying $AU45 for micro servos when I can get them for $AU25 overseas is more than my patriotism will allow.

Damn straight zaf, there will be NO hobby shops soon if the prices don't come down. I'd love to buy from them but most big ticket stuff is WAY over the net price.
Motors esc seem to be the scam, then there's radio gear......

i cant believe you added up the costs.
i have a headache just thinking about my collection
but easily 10-15 large in 1 year, all electric
If my wife knew she would kill me.

I try to buy locally to support the shops, but there are times i cant justify the extra costs. motors seem to be the worst.
I know nippon dave gets them to me for less than the local shops can buy them.

I think you got robbed Where in the world did you buy a $72.00 ACE simple 400 kit? Simple 400 are only $35.00

I think you should tell your wife, maybe she can help you out in finding good deals, better yet, the best deals around...LOL....
Then again, maybe not

My wife already killed me a long time ago, when I first bought my first BL motors. I thought, I was slick. I got caught and now, I sleep in the garage with my airplanes and beloved batteries and motors
