Multirotor Swarming & Collective Orders

Time will tell if this thread will help keeping prices for spare parts in the RCG multirotor scene low - or not...

Most multirotorists need many parts times 4 or 6 or more.
So why not open a dedicated thread for those who want to start or join a collective order?

SWARMING

Hobbyking.com offers a service for collective orders called swarm sale.

Some product' prices can drop dramatically if interested buyers join a swarm sale. It's easy: If available you just click the "SWARM" button and enter your email or the code of an existing swarm.

One example: hacker Style Brushless Outrunner 20-22L, usual price 14,72$ drops to 9,06$ This is an advantage of over 35%!!!

Problem is that Hobbyking ships most parts from Hongkong and that takes time for a delivery and also extra taxes & customs are involved.

I'll contact Hobbyking and ask them for easier and even cheaper swarmings and better stock in their US and EURO ware houses, since this would speed up the delivery.

We have some good reasons:
Prices drop to 2/3 or less - delivery could speed up and stocks could be kept targeting the needs of multirotorists.

We have some good arguments:
Most of us constantly need (counter rotating, slow flyer) props, escs, low kVA motors, strong lipos and stuff. And we need many of them to build tris, quads, hexas/Y6 and octos.

So why burn money???

There's a special site that lists all active swarm sales here: http://www.joinhobbykingswarm.com

This thread could also be a source for price announcements if somebody found something interesting or cheap he wants to share with others.

COLLECTIVE ORDERS

Besides Hobbyking there are many other sellers offering rebates for certain amounts of pieces per order.

Usually you'll get 15-20% advantage if you'll order 10pcs instead of 1 - or up to 40% if you order 100pcs instead of 10.

One advantage of collective orders would be shipping fees. Especially if you have to order abroad.

One example:

10 European customers want to buy something that's only available or extremely cheap in the US or Asian. Instead of paying high shipping fees, taxes and hassle with customs 10 times, only 1 person orders the necessary amount and distributes the items in his country or continent via simple mail.

There is a discussion going on about building own hardware for Flight Controllers and Sensor Boards based on the power the multirotor community has without a doubt.

This thread could also help fund new projects if interested users chime in to develop, design or build new hardware through pre-orders of samples to make sure the developers' expenses will be covered. PayPal makes it easy!

Looking forward to your inputs and especially on your lists and links of cheapos!

Happy Swarming,

Norbert

UPDATE: To avoid confusion, could you please edit your original post as soon as the swarming on a specific item has ended? Thx!

I started a SWARM thread in the "Hot Offers" section of the forum and it has over 1200 posts and tons of users in it. If you need a swarm completed just post it up and it will be completed in a matter of minutes to hours. We've also found out that everyone doesn't need to actually purchase it to get the swarm finished, just putting in your email to get 6 people will do it.

Thx for the info! I saw the official HK thread but I thought something multirotor specific would be helpful.

Well ... but in the end everyone has to buy his ordered items, no?

I see the swarming has already begun. Good luck, guys!

Norbert, Nice inititative!

Perhaps we should try to buy the sensors for the shield project in bulk....I will look into prices and suppliers now!

Hi, I joined your swarm. I received the email a few moments ago telling me two of these had ended. When I tried to purchase them, the swarm price did not work. Did you find the same thing? I have not had a lot of luck (worked only once so far) using these swarms.

If I understand things, these only last 12 hrs, you posted this at 3:20AM my time, so it should have worked as it is only 10:30AM my time now.

Did it work for you?

BTW, Norbert, this is a great idea if only HobbyKing system worked the majority of the time.

Iīve added to my cart just 1h ago. Itīs works for 12hr. Itīs says the code doesnīt exist or you canīt add them to you cart??

You have to clink on the link, join again to the swarm( with your mail) and then it adds to your cart.

The whole process itīs not very well done.

Just another last moment swarm:

When I clicked the link I received in the email, it went to the product page and the price was the same as usual and the swarm parts of the page were 'Join the Swarm' and 'Create a Swarm'. When it worked the one time for me previously, when clicked the page came up immediately with the swarm price and told me I had 12 hrs to add it to my cart. This time it did not do that for either item.

Oh well, not a huge problem, at least you got your parts for a lower price.

Happy New Year!

Good news!

The Bosch BMA020 accelerometer breakout board from ELV will be back in stock within a week!

I'll start a collective order for European customers soon since this will keep the shipping costs low.

Hi Norbert - those prices are looking good to me!

Shall we put some orders together soon? I could order the parts from Digikey (BMA020, BMP085, HMC5883L). But it might be smarter if someone stateside did it, and shipped it on to individual prototypers - this way we can avoid VAT affecting the price, as a single set of components would be under the limit for VAT and import-tax!

Someone else could get the ITG3200 (Or MPU6000 if it is available), from the Invensense Yahoo shop....

I would suggest something like 10 pcs of each.

You show the way - I'll follow you, Jussi!
But wouldn't it be better to order the BMA180 instead of the 020?
They only cost 2,50$ more and we already have working code for it.

Further tests with the BMA020 could be done by guys wanting to replace their NKs with the ELV breakout board.
