Thank you very much, Admiral!
This basically answers most of my thoughts/considerations.
That drawings have a good resolution allready. One more, if I may? Would you be willing to share the cross section plan(s) in a printable quality with me? I just want to compare the hull lines with my Pirate Galeon lines. Regarding the "HMS Royal Oak" - doing a google search I just discovered this link: http://www.ssplprints.com/category.php?catid=867 Now I know where these images originally come from! Also love that one: http://www.ssplprints.com/image.php?...romsearch=true "HMS Archilles" - thatīs a good name! |

Autsch!!!
Surfing the net to find more reliable datas about galeons of the 16th/17th century - especially of compareable size to my own german "Red Lion" of 1590 -
240-250 metric tons displacement - I had come across the "Andalucia". Really a nice galeon. Actually doing a google search for cross sections of that specific ship I came across this video: http://www.gmanews.tv/story/202929/r...r-da-del-galen Holy ! All this stupid blablabla - and not a single moment of her under sails in it. And reporter voices like scratching nails -...- ![]() Just checked on youtube for "Galeon Andalucia" and found this:
AAHHH! - Much better! ![]() Even the music is acceptable! ![]() And there is more. This seems to be the buildcrew at the christening of the ship:
Lovely details to watch. This time it at least stayed right side up:
Even a video of the build I found:
And then the huge surprise: This damn thing is made of fibreglass/polyester and got twin diesel engines!!! A quote from that site - with some technical datas. But no mention, that itīs actually a polyestership: "The Galéon Andalucía is made from pine, oak and iroko, a kind of hardwood sometimes referred to as African teak. It is 51 meters long and features a 10.10-meter beam with four masts for seven sails. It weighs 495 tons and has 10 cast-iron cannons." The interesting part for me: Itīs about a 1:1,25 scale compared to my "Red Lion" and twice as much displacement. |

This is very helpful!
Thank you very much, Mr. Yancovitch!
![]() I didnīt expect the (two) hullshapes to have much similarities, just wanted to have something real to compare to. And your "Royal William" is REAL! ![]() I hope you have seen our lovely "Marylin Monroe" of all ships in color? For more than 33 years I only knew these pics in black&white. Just in case you`ve missed the link: http://www.ssplprints.com/category.php?catid=867 |

And what have you done in between?
Looking at the first video of the launch of "Galeon Andalucia", I wondered where her props might be located.
Today I found this second video:
Here it clearly can be seen the props are located a bit lower than half of her draft and forward of the rudder. ______________ By the way - since yesterday my own galeon model isnīt any longer only a foam plug with wooden keel. From now on this is really a hull. 5 layers of 290gr. fibreglass twill + 1 layer of 160gr. twill. Plus 2.5 kgs epoxy resin. Seemingly seamless laminate -...- ![]() You shouldn`t try do do this unless you got a lot of experience with laminating. The tight radiusses around the keel are a pain to do and a challenge for your patience. And if you dare to try this, NEVER try to do it with glassfibre LINNEN - - allways use TWILL!!! + slow curing epoxy resin - 45 min. at least. - Otherwise youīll never have a chance to get it right! After the 4 hour battle and the day after:

What keeps me motivated to go on with shipbuilding?
Well - basically that kind of music:
Queen:
Axel Rudi Pell:
Another (favorite) one from Axel:
Hazel OīConnor: (Love that saxophone!)
Scorpions: (that oneīs especially good when sanding a big hull! - Getīs ya goin )
Russell Watson:
The Who:
Man oīWar:
Enya: This one is really dangerous - might be heading out to sea again!!!
Within Temptation: (Gothic + opera style female voice = incredible)
Sorry if that appears too personal - just couldnīt resist. Iīm just an emotional idiot. |
