Build Log
The Meteor - a 1950s Outboard Runabout

I built one of these in 1/10 scale some years back for static display and the occasional putt-putt around the docks with a K&O toy electric outboard. I based it on plans I found in an old magazine, made some changes, stretched it a bit so it wasn't so pudgy, and voila!

I blew up the frame drawings by 50% to better accomodate an Aquacraft EP1. I started working on the transom and frames this weekend... I think I will plank the deck in mahogany rather than just sheet ply as I did on the smaller model. Between "gas tank" and seats, I think I can hide most of the electronics and servo.

The most challenging part of this project is parting with the big $$$$$ for the outboard!!! Seriously, looks like a neat project and cant wait to see it done.

Actually, the motor for the new boat isn't an issue - the Aquacraft EP1 can be had all over the place for well under $100... My plan is to fab a retro-cowling for it to make it look more like an old Merc (like what's on the 1/10 scale version).

Spent a little time on the frames yesterday, assembling the last frame and glued plywood gussets to all the joints. Once dried, I got out the sanding block and cleaned them up a bit.

Next step is to notch all the frames for the stringers, battens and keel.

Very cool build.
I would like to do a similar build using a EP1.
What scale would you say the EP1 is?
I am thinking of building a one man boat like a Minimax.
So your boat will be roughly 1/7.5 scale?
I had the same idea of making a older looking motor cover. Dave.

Hi Dave,
The motor's scale can vary a bit based on the boat it'll be on. The late Gas Pump Bill repainted one as a 115 Honda. Saw another guy paint a pair of them as Evinrude 250s on a center console deep V. I'm going to aim for a Mercury Mark 55 (40hp). Being a generic motor to start with, you can fit the motor's scale to whatever you want, noting that the boat ought to be in the 22 to 28 inch range. Mine will be about 25 inches long.

Thanks Scott.
I was thinking 1/6 scale for the Minimax which would be 16" x 8" as they were 4'x8'. Then I could use a GI-Joe as a driver.
Hopefully at that scale the motor will not look to big. Dave.

Hi Dave,
I don't think a MiniMax will support the EP1 at 16-inches - that's awfully small and the EP1 is fairly heavy. Maybe shoot for 20-22 inches or so. I think that would look better in scale, too. If you wanted to aim for a scale look, the motor should be dressed as a 10-20 hp. I ran a 7.5 Evinrude on my MiniMax...
Russell - I love your decals! I've got some ideas on making a snap-on replacement cowling for the EP1. I will let you know if that pans out.

I guess I should do some cardboard mockups first with the EP1 to get a scale feel. I don't want it super scale but I don't want it to look like a 200HP merc on the back! LOL!!
I am not sure the EP1 can be made to look like a smaller 10-20HP motor because of the larger beefy looking lower end.
But I can try. Dave.
